#63043, "getting a new car"

okay, i'm in the market for a new car. i want either a talon tsi or a gsx. the thing is, probably like most of you, i can't afford a newer gsx. my question is this. would i be better off to get a 1g or a 2g? i know 2g's end up having the crankwalk, but that can be easily avoided by getting a 1g crank. but also, getting a 1g means the probable old car problems. i'm wanting to build a car for speed, somewhere in the 350-400 hp range. the only thing i've set my mind to is getting hks hiper exhaust, the full catback. i could use some help, and i'll probably be putting several more posts about this. i'm thinking this project may take up to a year. but i'm ready to start on it. so if any of you have a quick way to 400 hp, help me out. and i'm not much of a nitrous fan either. i'm looking to get the most power out of every bolton i can get. best intake, best intercooler, downpipe, everything. also, just some info, the car will be a sleeper. emoji it'll be lucky to have rims bigger than 15s. anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Can't afford the extra $2,000 for a GSX but want a 400 hp 420a? Got an extra $25,000 laying around?

for roughly $2000 outside of your exhaust choice you can get there in a 1G... Buschur "big 16", injectors, MBC, hard upper IC pipe, and air box mod. walla, 350hp.

i meant that if i bought a newer gsx, i wouldnt have money to do anything with performance. either buy a 98 gsx for about 11 grand or a 93 tsi or gsx for about 3 or 4 and have money. i'm not gonna try to get 400 hp out of a 420a. emoji

If you are going to be building the car for a year, the "old car" problems really shouldn't be a factor b/c you will be replacing most of the typical stuff that goes on old cars with performance parts anyway. I'd lean toward a 1G if I were you. That engine is a stronger engine internally - this is why some 2G's swap to a 1G motor. You'll build a faster car with a 1g. I find it interesting that you want to build a fast car but don't have the money for a newer GSX - hope you have money for mods - this hobby isn't cheap. emoji

well the thing about buying a newer gsx is that the money HAS to be spent to have the car. if i get a 1g and try to build it, i dont have to spend money til i have it. there's a method to my madness, just hasnt been explored yet. say i have 10 grand to spend on a car. that would probably get a 98 gsx. that money has to be spent right then to get it. or i get a 1g for about 4, then have 6 left to play around with. by the way, if anybody hasnt seen the feb 2004 issue of sport compact car, check it out.

400hp and reliable do NOT belong in the same sentence. at least when just 4-cylinders and boost are concerned. you either get a reliable car...or a really fast one. thats the decision you have to make first. Id personally go for a 2k dollar GSX and put 8k in it. with that much, you can pretty much replace anything is/will break.

nobody's buying anything for me. i'm just saying i'd rather have 10 grand in a 1g than 10 in a 2g. i'm only naming amounts of money, not saying i actually have it. but if i pay less on a car, i'll have more to spend on performance. as soon as i sell mine, im saving up for a tsi or gsx. wanted one since i was 16 so i'm gonna get one this time.

1g's may be fast... but they're FUGLY as well.

I know of a 2G here for sale for 4800... I wouldn't be spending 10g's on a 2g that I was going to be building any way. I would buy one with a crankwalked motor for less and go for there...

Hope you aren't buying this for a daily driver as well.

it'll be a daily driver. but my dad also has an extra car for when i'm ripping shit apart. i have a few friends that basically get a hard on from turbo's. so they know a good bit about helping me out. i'm not huge on the looks of a 1g, although i do think they're cool. a 2g is much better looking but i'm just wanting speed. so its all good.

hey that does look good. those wheels make it sharp, and it also helps that black eclipses have me whipped. only thing i dont like about the 90-91 models is the headlights. i'm not much for the flip up style. i see cars all the time with those and a motor has gone out, with one headlight staying up all the time.
