#62850, "when pump gas isn't enough..."

i was heading to Chinatown in Boston for Dim Sum on Sunday with a few friends and i decided to play around with my new boost controller on the way in. 1.0 bar. 1.1 bar. 1.2 bar. 1.3 bar....

POP POP POP POP POP POP POP

very uncool. my mixture was very rich the whole time. like .96+ on the oxygen sensor. EGT's got up to about 850-860 degrees centigrade, which is still within limits.

at least i heard the detonation and let off. probably lasted for less than 1 second. hopefully no damage was done... everything still runs great and idles fine.

i know that 1.3 bar is about 19 psi of boost, i guess i just found the limit of what 93 octane Mobil gas can do on my application. i just hope i didn't damage anything.

i read a while back that a chemicals called toluene and xylene can be mixed with pump gas (like 93 octane) and produce a fuel on the order of 96-100 octane. has anyone here tried this? i doubt this would hurt the engine at all, but i bet it's detremental to the oxygen sensor and the catalytic converter... since i don't have a cat, that's out of the equation...

bill once told me that if i used leaded race gas that my oxygen sensor would be laggy for a few days. not a big deal, seeing as how the ECU doesn't use the oxygen sensor at all at WOT. i wonder if there is any lead in toluene or xylene?

or should i just play it straight and actually caugh up some money and buy some real Sunoco 110 octane race gas for once?

Well, it looks like a cut and paste of the article I posted ^^^, but it's in an Audi forum....which is cool. One of the GN guys in that thread posted this link - http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html which covers the numbers for Toulene, Xylene, MTBE, and Methanol/Ethanol. Which is Very cool. I never had the skinny on MTBE before that one. May have to look into that a bit more.

Good link Skrilla emoji

I've used it on my WRX, and basically the stuff is extremely corrosive.. it WILL eventually cause detrimental damage. I don't recommend the stuff, even in a mild cocktail that is rarely used. I run 16-18 psi on Ultra 94 with no problems in my GS.. try that route. If not you may be able to find a Sunoco station that sells leaded 104 like a couple here in Ohio. 3 gallons of "red" to a full tank is what I use at the track to my delight.

Oh, and I have no affiliation with Sunoco.. haha emoji

Bullshit. Extreme corrossion is associated with other "boosters" what, exactly did it do to your WRX

I replaced #3 piston due to a near hydralock condition, and 2 seperate fuel lines were replaced because of leaks.. I used to run a 25% mixture regularly with a VF34 turbo and 20psi. I've seen the stuff used as an additive in t1 racing on Vipers for years with my job.. and this is what prompted me to try it.

The POP noise may be more attributable to your ignition(or lack thereof) as opposed to detonation. I had the same thing with anything more than 12 psi until I swapped out my old wires for a new set of Accel's. No more POP for me, thank you very much. emoji

yeah, this happened to me a little less than a year ago after i finally broke in my new engine and i wanted to crank the boost up higher than 5 psi. i went to boost and at exactly 10 psi and higher i'd get this insane misfiring, turns out my spark plugs were gapped really drunkally amonks other things.

i ended up getting the NGK's that everyone seems to like that are 1 heat range colder than stock, some Crane 8.5mm spark plug wires, and a "screamin' demon'" coil pack. problem solved.

Sounds good. I just know with boost, our 420a's and the 4g63's, the damn wires and plugs seem to be 90% responsible for any acceleration issues we have.

all the paint thinner and alcohols do eat up oil and lubrication in the motor read up on oil additives to the gas..

if you use alot of it all the time it could start to cause a problem unless you watch it...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.

I was JUST got back from tuneing for 20 psi. With Mobil 93 octane I spiked to 1.5 bar again ~22 psi, no problems tho. My egt's were about 1525 at 20 psi and I didn't hear any audible knock.

Mabye your plugs are fouled out? emoji

Toulene is perfectly safe.. it's already an additive in your regular pump gasoline.

As far as tuning on pump gas, timing it everything. You can run insane amounts of boost on pump if you know the timing curve well enough and have a good idea of just how to rebuild it to a lower number to take advantage of more boost. The tradeoff comes in the realization that both timing advance and boost makle power - take one out and add more of the other, eventually you reach a point where you're just not going to make any more power.

update... i went to my local painting supply store, but they were closed. the hardware store next door was open, so i went in and the best i could find was 3 quarts of xylene, similar to toulene. i added the 3 quarts to a little more than about a 1/3 of a tank of gas (about 6 gallons in the tank). the xylene was $3.29 a quart. i'm not buying it in quarts again, way too expensive.

so in my tank is:
6 gallons Mobil 93 octane
.75 gallons Xylene 117 octane

my math says that's an 11% concentration, which turns about a 95.6 octane solution.

i'm not sure if i used enough, i couldn't really tell if it did anything although 1.25 bar (~18 psi) feels a lot smoother when approaching peak torque (about 4500-5000 rpm's) in 3rd gear (it also scared the shit out of me yanking me around a corner on an on-ramp with no more inside tire spin!)

to sum it all up, i feel as if the right mixture and the right chemical does have potential for people like me who live in a state where race gas is somewhat hard to come by (or for paranoid people like me who are afraid of destroying my 3rd engine and just want that extra saftey margin). methinks more research is needed.
