#62805, "what am i getting myself into???"

a fellow 2gnter has made me an offer i think i can't refuse, but since i have no clue what i'm doing, i'd like to try and develop some background info...this guy was planning on building a custom turbo setup but then decided to sell his car, so his loss is my gain and he's wiling to sell me what he had for his setup. he tells me the only thing he's really missing from his turbo setup is a turbo manifold, and that he has everything else, including a ct26 turbo, wastegate, some BOV (forgot the brand) and a FMIC from a supra and umm, i dunon what else....so, does that seem alright? as my eventual goal is to run 12's to 13's...is this a good start in that direction? i do'nt have any performanc mods yet, so of course i'd need to buy things like an exhaust, all the piping, a downpipe, but what other stuff would i need? thanks for helping an ignorant noob, and i'm pretty sure the search button doesn't cover this questoin.

i think what he meant was the search button doesn't give opinions!!!!he already knows those are the parts he needs, just asking if it's a good start or should he go another direction....

to answer the question...it's up to you...some turbo is better than no turbo, but if you are gonna spend money you might as well build your engine first...you are just gonna blow it running boost, then just build your own kit/buy a kit...they aren't that hard to put together...there are a bunch of people making tons of manifolds, piping can be custom made...and there is a guy in NY who sells spearco intercoolers for like 450 and he'll make it however you want...

ty, i did take some time to search, but wasn't really finding answers, but i was looking for both opinions and facts, cause basically everything i read now is new info to me since i'm still very new to all of this...but basically i wanted to know if what i had was a good start, it'll probably be a while before i can boost, but i was wondeirng what you guys thought of the ct26 turbo, and like the supra fmic and stuff...it's bumpintool's parts, so he knows more aobut them than i do...i just got offered a really good deal on all this stuff now, so that's why i was looking at it, and i know that before boosting over 7-8 psi i'd need to start rebuilding...thanks, jsut throw info at me.

the supra fmic is not very good (MKIII which goes witha ct26 turbo)

the ct26 is aorund the same size as a 20g turbo..
its okay not a very impressive unit though...

might as well get some better parts to start with.

stay witha t3 style turbo.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

well you should sell the parts or trade for other turbo parts. Do a search for custom turbo kit parts.

Yes it would be hard. You would probably need to get a new manifold. The intercooler pipes would probably need to be different since the size and the inlet & outlet for the intercooler wouldn't be located in the exact same place. You would also more then likely have to have a new flange welded on the downpipe too.

so basically your wasting your time and money buying a kit, installing it, buying upgrades, taking old parts off, installing new ones, and trying to sell old parts. Rebuild then go turbo it'll be a lot easier and you won't have to worry about blowing the engine.

What are you getting yourself in to? For me it was a bittersweet experience all of this GS Turbo kit. I wanted to turbo the 420A because it's original, etc, etc.

I look back eight months ago when I bought a used HRC turbo kit and engine. Dude, I blew that motor due to inept tunning on part of the shop. They did not put an SFMU to up the FP so I was boosting at 15psi, LEAN! To top it off the turbo I got had bad seals, so I hhad to buy a new one. Guess what? That turbo was screwed too. SO I bought yet another one and I got a s16g instead of a s20g from HRC.

Eight months later and about $23k in parts and labor (two engines, turbos, coilovers, etc) and I just think "WTF!! I should have bought a GSX!"

If you are doing the work youself, then do it right and triple check everything. If sending the car to a shop, expect costs to double. Do some reading bro before you get yourself into this. I regret the day I bought the engine and all of the parts! Late emoji

Yeah I gotta agree with all that's said before. That custom kit is a waste of time, and really in my opinion if you're thinking of "running 12's 13's" but you don't know what it takes to make a good custom kit you're really really in need of a lot of reading.

I've been reading this forum for over a year and I'm just now getting stuff together for a custom kit. And how many guys here run 12's anyhow? You're not gonna do it with that kit for sure. You gotta have a lot of rebuilds and upgrades before you hit that. With a basic kit on a stock engine you're lookin at high 14's i believe.

there are a couple good options to upgrade that turbo but its big enough right now that you wouldn't need it..

i know where you can get the ct26 upgraded witha 60-1 wheel and new cartridge all ready to go for 450$

the intercooler is okay it would work for a while youd need a custom flanged manifold.
the wastegate is set at 6.8psi

it can be done it not that bad ofa start but its nota fast spooling t3 either..

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

alright, well, i appreciate the advice guys...originally i was trying to save up until i could afford a kit, or until the chill factory one came out, but then a guy i know offered me a really good deal on the aforementioned parts, and i didn't know anything about them, so i was wondering what you guys thought about them....i thought they'd be ok since i don't think a friend would sell me something crappy that he was planning on putting on his own car. i'm still undecided though on what to do emoji

Well, surely, building a custom kit is the BEST way to go for making your car fast, but for doing that, you HAVE TO SPEND at least 6 months on this board reading EVERY SINGLE OLD/NEW post on turbo and learn everything inorder to do it! IMPOSSIBLE??? look at me.

Most of the members on here knows, I was new 1 year ago ok. I don't konw shit at that time.
And today, I can't say I know alot (lol at least I can't tune my fuel system good yet... stupid me) I rebuilt the 420A engine (my g/f engine), I made my custom turbo kit and installed it myself... and so on... all you need is patience and time!

LEARN MAN...LEARN!!!
Gil

EDIT: let me add this, GSX? I smoked that car.. lol.
I know, I smoked a stock GSX... but still, once I rebuild my own engine, I can turn that MBC up and smoke MORE cars.... LOL.

well, i talked to my friend today and he might have to sell the turbo parts to someone else, so this problem might alleviate itself, but if it doesn't, i'll probalby just buy the parts anyway, and if i don't like them, i can sell them to someone else....and i do intend to learn as much as possible because i do know next to nothing right now, just this deal came along and i didn't think i could pass it up, guess i can now...but, please, bare w/ my ignorance and help me learn emoji

if you want to know about the aformentioned parts check out the MKIII section on supraforums.com cause those are the turbo parts you have.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
