Don't take any timing out. You're fine.

17 degrees is fine, don't touch the timing. When you up the boost, try increasing the boost by 1-2 psi at a time and see if your ECU advances timing any (18-19 deg. is pretty normal.) I have boost proportional timing retard setup with my Crane; it's set to almost the first knob, which equals to a total of 3 degrees retard. I like to keep my timing around 18 degrees. I guess it also varies from car to car. Others run 15-18 psi w/o any timing retard and they're fine, and some people will run a more aggressive timing at around 20-21 degress. That should be fine, as long as you tune your a/f and egt for it. If you pull timing more than 17-18 degrees, your car will feel sluggish. Trust me, I've tried it:7

len doesn't retard timing armond quit blowing up motors when he junked his bad msd box...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

Just out of curiosity, I datalogged my car again and it seems my car advances timing to 28+ degrees under a full load and 15 psi of boost. I'm not sure what timing you guys get, but 28 degrees seems to be a bit high. That's why I currently retard about 7 degrees at 15 psi boost; that leaves me at about 21 degrees of timing.

Are you using an SAFC or some other device that alters the MAP sensor voltage?? 28 deg of advance at WOT is not normal.

I also agree that it's not normal. The only thing I'm using is the ML. I tested the MAP sensor in July '03 and it was good. I'll check it again. I guess if the MAP sensor or ML is bad, that might have contributed to the bad timing advance--that is why I pull about 7-8 degrees of timing at 15+ psi boost. Of course this compromises performance gains, but I'd rather not blow anything for now.

if the guys making the most power on the board aren't retarding timing and running around on pump gas why would ya bother just gonna loose power.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
