#62031, "got sum rod knock"

my turbo has been on my car for about 3,000 miles.
when the car is cold and i hit the gas slightly while idle i get the rod knock. i even had a certified mechanic verify this. so basically it's really there.
Do I think it is because of the turbo? no. i'm not sure, but i think this problem might have existed before but I just ignored it.
Of course once the car warms up you can not get it to make the knocking again.
i already have mobil 1 in their since before the turbo and the car has 85,000 miles.

should I be worried?
should I start to think about buying a new block?
how soon until i'm screwed?

thanks guys

you sure it is rod knock.. cus piston slap has the same signs as what you said. they will slap when cold but once hot they expand and don't slap.

Most likely lifter tick. Once your oil heats up and thins out it quiets down.

You might be a DSM owner if:

i don't mean to steal the thread, but can anyone describe exactly what lifter tick sounds like on our cars? right now i have what i thought was an exhaust leak around the turbo area, but it goes away after the car's warm. it's pretty noticeabble outside the car, and sounds like.. tick tick tick.. u get the idea, so i dunno, can that be lifter tick?.. never heard lifter tick although i know it's common on our cars.

sorry 'bout that.. to answer your question though, yeah, are u sure it is rod knock? i don't believe rod knock will "go away" once the engine's warm. anyway, if it is in fact rod knock, then i wouldn't drive the car much until it's fixed.. less damage to your crank

IF you have a slight rod knock, try changing the oil to a regular 20W50. The Mobil one might be too thin for your engine. Don't forget to change to a new oil filter too.
This wouldn't hurt to try emoji Plus if you get WalMart brand oil and filter it should only cost you about $11.

Hey 97eclipseRS start the car and listen to the valve cover closely. If it sounds like it coming from there then its lifter tick. It could be your injectors also, its normal for them to tick.

If it sounds like rod knock and not lifter tick, and it goes away once the car is warmed up, I'll bet you have a cracked piston ring land. My car did the exact same thing after I ran 13 psi on stock internals. It still ran great except for that noise that sounded like rod knock only when the car was cold. Once it warmed up, the noise was gone. If I were you, I'd do a compression test.

hmmm.. doesn't sound like rod knock. it sounds like an exhaust leak, but since it's like 25 degrees here now, i haven't felt like finding the leak. i was just wondering if lifter tick sounds anything like that. weird thing is, like i said, it goes away after it's running for like 1 min.
i'll do a comp test anyway, but i highly doubt it's anything to do w/ the pistons/ring lands. i've drivin' about 4k miles with this sound at startup, and it runs better than ever and absolutely no blowby. there has never been any oil at all in the catchcan. the noise sounds like a "puff puff puff puff puff..." about as fast as the exhaust pulse.

EDIT: haha, i just realized that you were answering the question of the person that started the thread.. long day

If it was rod knock, it shouldnt get better as the engine heats up....it should actually get worse, and increase sound with increased engine RPM. Id say its lifter tick. or piston slap. is your engine rebuilt? get a mechanics stethoscope and listen on your engine, and see if the noise is oulder down near the block, or up at the head. that'll give you a general idea.

You can use a long screwdriver. Place one end were you think the noise is coming and put the ear in the other end. You will hear the noise traveling trhough the screwdriver. This way you can isolate the noise. Try it on the head, the top of the block, in the bottom of the block and in the oil pan.

You put it perfectly, I would def recommend a thicker oil and see if the noise thins. When the knock is at it's worst you can feel it pretty good in the clutch.

Thicker oil may be a good idea, but i'm pretty sure once you've "trained" an engine for synthetic, as in you've run synthetics in it for a long time, you really can't go back...

It could be an old wive's tale though, only minus the "old wife".
