#61419, "Engine is making noise....."
Nov-27-03 06:22 AM by gilee_8

Guys... all I can say is, I am WORRIED.
Yesterday I drove back home from college for Thanksgiving thing.
And I drove about 3 hours.
it is fine all the way. I did boost occasionally, but not like all the way.
I never go higher then 1500F on my EGT.
And the whole way down the trip I am going at 70-80MPH with my EGT around 1300-1440F (sometimes boost to 1500F)

After 3hours driving, last nite and this morning when I wake up I start my car again.
The engine is making tick tick tick tick noise.....
It's not loud but I can hear it from outside the hood.

I seen a spun bearing 420A before(my g/f eclipse), and this time, the sound 'seems' like coming from the Engine head not the engine block (i really hope so).
And if I step on the gas pedal to make the RPM go up to about 2K, the sound seems like it disappeared.

CAN ANYONE tell me what could it be? I really don't want it to be that I blown my engine. BTW.. I just changed my valve cover a few days back. Used silcone sealant, original valve cover set and so on.... oil level is good also..

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GUYS...PLEASE HELP ME HERE!
I am so worried on Thanksgiving day....dammit...
GIl:bowdown emoji emoji

**EDIT** want to make sure: when I listen to my g/f engine, it makes "tunk tunk tunk tunk" sound (but that's when her piston is complete cracked into pieces) and now I only hear light tick tick tick tick. but is it just the beginning?
HELP! BTW how can I do compression test myself? any input will be greatly appreciated emoji

I am still very worried.
Let me tell you more fine details ok.
My car has 80K miles on it.
I never heard of that sound before, I know I use to have thoes FADE ticking sound...but those are really fade and little.

What I want to say is... after I turbo chargered my car about 2-3 weeks ago, everyhting is fine. but I am really rich.

After yesterday driving for 3 hours straight back home, my car start having the TICKING sound... the loudness is like at NITE when sleeping in PURE SILENCE, you hear your clock ticking... but now you increase that loudness to open door, at day time and I still hear that loudness. (so it's very noticable)

So is that still ok?
I mean, I never hear it before.
If I leave it, will it destroy my cams? valves? engine?
Why is it making sound?
Thanks alot!

Well is it the injectors? Ive youve never paid attention to them you might have noticed them. Yes its normal. Do a compression check to make sure though. does it run rough at all?

I get the cricket tick all the time, but thats different I think.

the lifter tick is normal for us.. my lifter tick started around 30,000miles give or take and i just replaced them when i did a compelte rebuild.. the lifters are in the head pretty easy to change.. but yah could be the injectors making noise which is normal. if your compression is good then there is nothing big to worry about.... oh yah the weight of the oil or type could cause lifter tick noise ....

You should'nt worry to much. If knocks when you rev it up, then worry. My shit has tapped for years. It could be what the others said or even an exhaust leak at the manifold.

what you mean when I rev up then it should tick?

I am saying is, the ticking sound is there.... and when I step on the gas, the ticking sound goes quicker...so is that mean the lifter?

OK guys... can you guys tell me where and how I can do a compression test myself? thanks.

go to the main site or on here, Corbin did a write up.

In really simple terms,

disconnect the fuel and ignition/coil relays on your firewall, near your reservoir.

Take out the spark plugs,

Use the proper size adapter for the comp gauge and put it in the spark plug wells.

crank the car till the compression needle stops moving ( if yours works that way), usually 2-4 times.

write down the number.

If it's a rod bearing you won't be able to tell from a compression test. Is it more of a ticking or a rattling sound? A rod bearing has more of a rattling sounding tick. If it's just a tick, tick, tick, that gets faster as the engine revs than it's probably a sticky lifter. You should hear how loud the lifters in my gsx are before the engine warms up.

So you guys are saying...
if it is a lifter problem
Then it will ONLY MAKE SOUND when it is not warm up?

So after driving, and I stop the car, and I go out to hear it, there shouldn't be anymore noise...RIGHT? (ticking noise)

I just want to make sure that it is only lifters and not rods or etc...

Also, why is it sticking? will it hurt my cams and head and so on?
Should I continue to boost my eclipse if I have those ticking...and even if they are caused my lifter?

Thanks everyone!

I think heavyer oil will help your lifter tick. How many miles are on your head? Start the car and listen to the valve cover, then get under and try to listen to the oil pan area. Find where the noise is coming from, that will tell you a lot.

My 1g had lifter tick like you wouldn't believe! Changed to mobil1 5-30w and it went away.
