#61384, "What the heck my cat melted"

I've been noticing that recently my boost has not been rising as fast and i thought it was a wastegate problem, but i decided to check my cat for the heck of it and I found that the whole engine side of the cat was melted, it looked like a moon canyon in there.
Now what the heck could have caused this. My egt's were under control, but i was running pretty rich for a while. I have been running pretty low boost lately (10 psi).
so can being rich cause a cat to melt? Oh I also advanced my exhaust cam 2 degrees so i could get a little quicker spool, Could this have caused it?

Thanks
James

depending on whether or not you have a full stainless substrate or ceramic, it could be a couple things... but my guess from experience is that due to running rich you were getting repeated afterburn in the case and the extreme temp caused it to melt... I see this on vipers all the time.

No prob, I think I will run outlaw for a little while. I need to get a new cat though. Mine was a 3 inch with apexi flanges welded to the ends. now its just a big tube. I think I will just keep it like this cause my car is freaking super fast without it.

Thanks

When you do go back,I recommend going with Random's stainless/ceramic combo 3" in/out converter.. I've been running at 16-18psi for over a year with both leaded and unleaded race gas blends... No fried egg smell yet!
