#60434, "My car sounds like a machine gun at 16 psi. (kinda long)"

Hey guys, like the topic says my car is going crazy. I recently installed the Apexi super actuator valve controller, which is a bad ass boost controller. I love it. Well after I installed my new motor from VT and broke it in I went back up to VT to dyno it. We dynoed at 16 psi and everything was fine. Since then i have been taking the car out at night to tune the EIC for the 8 injector setup, and bugging the hell out of Matt95tgs because he has a very similar setup. I had the car tuned at 18 psi and it was running great. My B setting on the AVCR is about 12 psi, and 16 psi once I hit the scramble switch. This is the setting I keep it on for the street. So I finally get the car running really well. what goes up must come down.

I am running with a camaro down the davison friday night. The car is running great, I handed the guy his ass. I have tuned on the rich side just in case, and to keep my egts down. Well after playing with the camero I realise my car is doing something weird. I stop boosting for the rest of the night.

Saturday. I take the car out, its still doing it. at 12 psi everything is fine, I hit the scramble and jump to 16 psi. Before I get to 16, actually about at 14 or 15 psi the car looses its power and a machine gun noise is coming from my exaust. I cannot hear any metalic noise when it does it (detonation), but my exaust is really loud. Also thier is no drop in o2 voltage when It happens. I pull my plugs and they are looking a little dark. I go get a set of BKR6e-11's because nobody stocks 7e's or 8e's. I gapped them to .29 and replace my wire with standard bosch wires. I cannot find my fluke meter to test my coil pack, so i just ordered the MSD replacement one from jegs, and it should be here tomarrow.

So my question is, what should I look for? I want to get this ironed out today. My Z has to go into storage at the end of the month, and I want to be able to trust my eclipse as much as you can really trust a DSM that is. What do you guys think? I'm stumped!! emoji

When it boils down to it. It is fuel or iginition. I would say check your whole iginition system including sparkplug gap, wires, plugs, and pack. Then I would go and check out 8 injector setup, I dont know alot about the 8 injector setup but make sure that its running correctly also. If you ask me I bet its iginition

Yeah, I think its the ignition too, and I have replaced everything BUT the coilpack.

After replacing the plugs it was still the same, then after new wires it seemed to be working better, but still not properly. So I think mabye between the coil and wires, the new wires are conduction better and helping. But mabye the coilpack is still sending out a weak spark.

If the spark is getting blown out becuse the coil pack is weak can that damage my engine? I would think no, because its simply not fireing. emoji

good thing I caught this, I just posted a fix on the performance section. Check your pcv check valve. Blow and suck through and shake it to see if it's making any noise. Nothing sounds right, replace it. Costs about 2 something. Hope this fixes it.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I had the EXACT same thing happen with me a couple of weeks ago. Everytime, I boosted over 12-13 psi, I had that machine gun popping out the exhaust.

I did a ton of searching here and at dsmtalk and found that it's very common and most likely attributable to the ignition. Most people had issues with their wires or plugs. I knew I had just changed my plugs, so I went out and bought myself some new Accel's. After installing them, she ran like a champ once again, at above 15 psi. BTW, my old wires had PERFECT resistance, but for some reason, they just couldn't put out the necessary juice over 12 psi.

(too bad my tranny had a leak, and I had to drop it, fix the seal and re-install it. Hopefully, I can finish it up today and get her back on the road!) emoji

Hey J, thanks!

I figured thats what it was because the new wires helped a bit. So i decided to go with the coil pack. I am using the crappy bosch wires, but ill probably get some decent wires really soon.

DSMRoadster: how could a bad pcv valve cause this? too much crankcase pressure? I think that would basically just give me a little extra blow by. The PCV valve is basically brand new. emoji

I guess Ill have to wait for the new coilpack and go from there. emoji

yeah, I was hoping it was something simple. It almost always is emoji

I got the multiplier down to 7.0 and its running kinda lean at 16 psi, so im going to have to go back up a bit. I really need to tune it with a wideband, I have been tring to get the guys at ramcharges to buy one and rent it out but they wont do it. emoji

Ill be truckin some more of those slicks up to VT this weekend, and taking a block up for Grain. do you want these DOT approved type slicks too? they are like scorchers or whatever. I don't need any more of these tires now. I picked up some brand new steelies w/ MT slicks brand new for $300! :o
