#59846, "what does someone think of these ideas........."

ok, i was only planning on going 5psi with stock internals until someone rearended me and now im planning on doing a rebuild...right now i have a 1g intercooler, but ive heard its only good up till 13psi or so.....well i thought of two ideas to try to keep it cooler, sort of like the ntercooler thing....
1.) get a heat switch to turn on a small radiator fan....this will help when in traffic or when drving slow....
2.) get a heat switch to turn on a small pump and spray alchoal or some other cool liquid on the intercooler....one its cool, the switch will turn it off....this would help imo a lot....it would help keep the intercooler from getting heatsoaked

what are your thoughts on these.... i was planning on running around 15psi, and when racing, run around 18psi.... i would like to keep the 1g smic for the time being, maybe down the line i will upgrade, but has anyone done either of these?

I will probably here a lot of not possibles and so on from some of the other guys here but a 1g side mount will hold everything you want. Most of us with 1g dsm's are still running the sidemount when we are pushing 22 psi on race gas with 14b's and small 16's with nothing but hard intercooler pipes and injectors. The side mount will be fine with no spray or fan at all.

Oh don't get me wrong, it does not have the surface area to cool for back to back passes, when we do it, we make a pass in the neighborhood of 22 psi or so, when tuned properly you get 10 counts of knock or less at the top of third and no timing pulled at all so it is still doing its job. Just not well enough for multiple passes. After one pass, I stop, pull into the pits, its warm to the touch, and I shove a small bag of ice in the foglight hole for 30 minutes or so and then go make another. It gets warm, its just plenty for a pass every 20+ minutes, not autocrossing lol.

I've put some thought into this also...Not with a temp switch though but rather a pressure switch. A fan probably wouldn't work that good with my idea, because it wouldn't be on long enough. Actually now that I think about it you could proably do something like they do with water injection and just spray alchohal with boost pressure...mmmm...I might put some more thought into that.

F/I V8 guys love alcohol. Most of the racers I know don't use an IC and just use an RPM switch to inject. These are usually race cars though. I woud say to run the sidemount for awhile and then upgrade after the engine is broken in. What's another $300 after putting down the cash to rebuild?

Shit is all apart. Typical...

hmmmm....some sort of boost switch would work pretty nice....like once it gets over 12psi or something, spray the intercooler....interestin emoji ....does anyone know of something like this.... what about the boost solenoind...would that help with anything... yeah, i would like to get a front mount, but if this would work, id much rather put the $300 towards something else....perhaps insurance, or school.... ha, car first, then school...thanks for the input

I used to see boost activated switches on ebay. Then I think I would take an old windsheild washer resivior with a pump in it and probably a home depot spray nozzel of some kind and bam....a really cheap ntercooler sprayer. That's just what I've been thinking of....I'm sure it wouldn't work as good as an N2O system but for around 50 bucks I don't think it would hurt...as long as you didn't spray so much that it got to the ground and caused you to lose traction.

Here I found an auction emoji

a fan will not help. Why? because the IC doesn't have to do its job all the time like a radiator does. it only has to deal with temp spikes as boost and load increases.

An nter-cooler whatever is not ideal. Why? because eventually it runs out. You're putting a bandaid on a real problem - your IC can't keep up. Solution? get a better IC, or don't run so much boost you overrun your IC's ability to dissipate heat. period. anything else is bullshit and you're being lied to.

well the pressure switch would deffinitely be a good idea....i know this isnt "ideal" but i think it would be a pretty cheap little upgrade.... im deffinitely going to try it when i actually get my turbo in..... i can see why the fan wouldnt help at all, i never thought of it that way.... so what is everyone running with the 1g smic?
