#59683, "How much PSI?"

I am curious. How much PSI can my stock rs eclipse handle without any mods. I would like to know the extreme and the median. Someone please help me out with this? I just ordered the stage II turbo with the 3" catalytic convertor, 3" downpipe, and the 3" exhaust through HRC. And I want to increase the boost. But I don't know how much boost I can use.

10 psi is the absolute maximum I could suggest. It's god practice to stay below 10, however. 8 psi is a great boost level, intercooled of course.

I don't think Hahn sells a 3" downpipe for the 420a. You sure you didn't accidentally order the one for the 4g63??

Personally I wouldn't run over 8-9psi on stock internals, and just make sure it's tuned correctly. I ran that way for 6 months with no problems, then I tried turning up the boost and BOOM! emoji

I am running 7 right now. When I watch my boost gauge during hard acceleration, it hits 8, then immediately settles in at 7 and stays there. I'm ok with this for now, but definitely hungry for more. I'm sure my new clutch will make it feel quicker, the stock one is slipping like none other.

7-8 psi tops....any higher is skating on thin ice....

Im intercooled and only run 5 -7 psi. Tune a tad rich, watch your EGT's, & keep an eye on everything.

You are very firm in your belief that any boosted 420A on stock internals will inevitably blow up. Why are you so sure of this?

Because we are seeing them blowing since the first kit came on the market 4-5 years ago

absolute minimum record is 10 minutes blow the engine while playing with the new found power and longest is 2 years I think

last spring somoene digged up a 15-16 months old post about stock engine reliability under boost
Someone else wrote that since then all of the boosted guys who replied blown their engines too in the following months

start at the lowest. and increase it slow till 9psi max. i did 12psi with some #30 injecs with a stock motor... i lastest a few years about 20,000miles..
i think if you keep the boost low like 6-7psi and your fuel/ignition is in order you should be cool...

this does hold quite true... not many of you know about my case, but in March of 99 I put an HRC stage 2 on my 98 GS. From then I ran 7-8 psi until mid summer 2001 (almost 20,000 mi). All was good, and I was getting greedy. So in that summer I went to Accel 36lbers and shit-canned the Cartech for an FMU because of inconsistancy, then upped the boost to 12 psi. I ran the car until December 2001 with no problems, and actually still had good compresion on all 4 cylinders. Eventually a ring land would have let go, but I attribute the length in time to alot of tuning and the fact that the turbo went on the car with 14,000 miles on the odometer. Just keep in mind the stock hats are not designed to take the abuse turboing creates, and eventually they will need to be swapped.. it could be 100 mi @ 10psi or 100,000 @ 4psi, it's boils down to your set-up and understanding. I hope this helps..

Ok thanks. So I will keep it at at 5 instead then boost it to 9 when need be. I had it at 15 and some friends told me that probably wasn't a good idea. But I haven't got the exhaust yet and hopefully I can exchange it. I look into that. I have another question where can i get a ton of info on my 420A engine? I would greatly appreciate the help.
