#59527, "EGTs seem to be rising quicker. What gives?"

Lately I've noticed my EGTs have been rising quicker than normal. Granted I'm a stage 1 with stock injectors but I'm only boosting 5-6 lbs and my fuel is tuned a bit richer than the HRC specs to be a bit safer. I have it at 49 psi at idle and about 90 psi under full boost. I'm using the S-FMU also so I'm guessing my fuel pressure under boost is the same. I have the blinky A/F gauge and under WOT it's pinned on the rich side. My exhaust tip has a nice coat of black after driving for a while so it's not like I'm on the lean side.

While driving my EGTs stay around 900 or 1000 degrees but if I give it any boost or come to 0 vac it will stay around 1100 or 1150. Highway driving around 70mph will give me 1250 readings. My probe is in the cyl. 1 exhaust port.

That's all the info. Any suggestions or explanations would be much appreciated. emoji

dude i pretty much have the same readings as you. i think that's normal. at WOT what your max egt? i have stock injectors as well, idles at 9-1000, cruise at 11-1200, WOT at under 1400. AF readings at 1.02 WOT or more. idle fp is around 50. what was it like before?

hey what type of fp gauge are you using? i've been having issues with either the vortech sfmu or the fp gauge. does your fp sometime dip into the 42 psi range at random start ups. shits pissing me off???

I absolutely recommend ditching the blinky AF. I have apexi TT with digital AF, O2 sensor, batt voltage (imo, batt volti s important to see if you have enough voltage to run the fuel pumps and all the accessories). i got mine new on ebay for $70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well before they just didn't seem to rise as quickly. It seemed that the needle moved slower but maybe I'm just crazy.

Well since I have no way of cooling my air flow (stage 1 like you) I'm guessing my EGTs would just keep on rising so I'm not sure exactly what you mean by max EGT at WOT. I have taken it to 1500 before and I was well over 100mph. I need a more specific question, I'm a noob
.

And I have the HKS Type 1 turbo timer that I know at least has the battery voltage meter. I'll have to look through the instructions to see if it has the other functions you mentioned. I only use it for cooling down my car.

BTW - I'm using the fp gauge HRC provided that sits in the engine bay.

Those are low EGT readings. You may see an increase in rise rate because of cooler weather. Cooler weather = more dense air = more need for fuel. Those numbers are still right on.

You can say that again. Too many gauges + stock bottom end + no $1650 for FTY = pathetically paranoid every time I give it gas

hehe

im getting used to all the turbo jargon too.

WOT (wipe open throttle), so what's the highest egt you get when pushing the pedal down. WOT is when i do all my tuning, like when i push the peddle all the way (or WOT), i take note what boost i reach(5 psi), AF readings(1.02), egt (1400), fp(89)). it helps to have everything right in your bezel!!!

Right, but that's what I'm saying. When I go WOT it rises as I go faster and doesn't stop until I let off. When you say your EGTs under WOT are at 1400 do you mean your needle stops at 1400 when you wind out the car? Sorry, I don't get it. Explain it as if you were explaining it to a retarded person please. emoji

WOT = Wide Open Throttle.

hes asking what are your EGTs when you go full throttle.

hehe parania!!!!!

damn i got a scare today too!...

started up the car to go to the gym, CEL comes on. first time since going turbo. of course i am thinking "shit, oh GOD oh no not a blown engine." disconnect the batt to clear the cel, check if smoke from the oil dip stick, none, check ghetto water bottle catch can, no oil. go to the gym work out anxiety out of my system. come back home and everytime i get into boost MAJOR HESITATION. so of course i'm panicking. get home, do a compression test, 190 190 190 185. cleaned my MISSING LINK cause i read on here that you should do that, disconnect batt, and everythings fine!!! i'll do some major driving in a few days to see if the cel is back but...

so yeah im saving for the fty block too!!

opps

i meant WIDE OPEN THROTTLE , not wiPe open throttle. get to a high way, make sure its clear of traffic and tune from there. my egt at wot are under 1400. does its spike to fast to 1400? i mean the egt gauge should reach a certain temp cause your motor with the turbo is creating A LOT of heat, but if it hits 1600 then you gotta worry.

someone with more experience should help here, sorry man emoji

All of your EGT readings are just fine. You are actually seeming to be too rich. 1400 degrees is a totally safe temperature to aim for at highway speed. Hell, even at WOT hitting 1500 isn't the end of the world....just no higher. But 1200 degrees? PLEASE!

I know what WOT means, I'm just saying that when I'm racing my EGTs rise with my speeds. It doesn't just stay at one certain point at WOT. It rises the faster I go. That's why I don't understand what you mean my EGTs are at WOT. They just keep going higher the faster I go so how do you pinpoint an exact EGT? Does anybody know what I'm saying? I don't understand at what point during WOT you can determine your EGT since it keeps rising the faster you go.

BTW Ryan Hes your post /\ was helpful. Thanks man emoji makes me feel a lot better.

I hit 1500+ all the time. No biggie. No detonation. Not worried... emoji And they do go up very fast, like less than a second.

The EGT probes dont react super fast, esp if its an Autometer gauge. Next time, when you go WOT, do it in 4th gear, and ride out the gear to at least 6000 rpm. Then take note of your EGT. Of course, this means you will be speeding, which is why you should go to a dyno emojiBut from your readings, you have PLENTY of fuel, unless your egt probe is whacked..1250 at 70 mph sounds very low..i'm around 1375 at 70. emoji

1500-1575 is cool for egt.. before back in the day i use to pass or be right at 1600 at 9/12psi with stock injecs/stock motor. of course i knew what was going on.. but 1500 for egt is nothing..

I do reach about 1300+ on the way up to 70, but after that with about 1/3 pedal pressure to keep a constant speed it cools down to about 1250. The EGT probe should be in good shape and was installed correctly as far as I know. Thanks for the replies guys. emoji

I am also at around 1400-1425 at 75mph. Do any of you experience super high egt's at part throttle. When going up a long hill my egt's go right to 1600+ when im only using like 25-40% throttle to keep the car at 70 or so mph, if it does go into boost it is only for like 1-2 psi. Soon as I gun it, the egt's go right back down to 1475-1500. (that is at 7lbs on forged pistons)

Granted I'm not on a stock setup any longer, but right now, my idle fp is set to ~19-22psi and my EGT's are around 875-925, at full boost (~10psi) I'm @ 110-115psi and my EGT's are around, oh, 1450-1525. I still have black smoke out the tail pipe when I down shift and punch it, but that doesn't bother me. I say you're right about where you should be. yes, @ partial throttle the ECU advances timing so your EGT's are gonna get up there. Just let off the throttle or floor for a second or 2 and the EGT temps will go down.
