#59072, "Lithium Grease Results In... *PICTURES* Is this good or bad?`"

Just a little update for those that haven't been following the chaos

after i had the engine rebuilt and put 750miles on it i started to hear a little knocking or so i thought... it sounded mostly like it was coming from the head. I did a compression test and this is what i got:

#1 60 #2 150 #3 150 #4 150

I checked the lower end and everything was tight no updown movement of the rods and little side/side play...

I took the head off and didn't notice anything wrong... I had the head port polished and milled but didn't replace the head internals.. i.e. valves etc.. they where taken out but not replaced.

someone on the last thread i posted suggested i put lithium grease in and around the cyl walls and see if the rings scraped it up... this is how you could tell if you had bad rings... I did this and here are the pictures...

let me know what you think?

picture #1: I used white lithium grease.. this is the entire cyl wall covered with the piston in the full down position.

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp47%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E232345945%3A879ot1lsi

picture #2: a closeup picture of #1 cyl covered in lithium grease.

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp3%3B%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E232345945%3C334ot1lsi

picture #3: an even closer picture of #1 covered in white lithium grease

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp47%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E232345945%3C37%3Aot1lsi

picture #4: after turning the engine over one rotation it looks as if it scraped all the grease up... except the top but the rings don't reach that far up..

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp8%3Enu%3D3237%3E288%3E2%3C4%3EWSNRCG%3D323254%3A3724%3B4nu0mrj

picture #5: an other picture of the goop scraped off by rings it looks like

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp47%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E2323459463477ot1lsi

picture #6: yet an other picture of the goop scraped to the top

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp3%3B%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E2323459465232ot1lsi

picture #7: a closeup of the top of the piston where all the goop collected. but notice the cyl walls... they are scraped clean.

http://images.snapfish.com/338993%3A%3B23232%7Ffp47%3Dot%3E2328%3D379%3D3%3B5%3DXROQDF%3E2323459465282ot1lsi

so let me know what you guys think??? should i now focus on the head?

looks fine to me dude. you can take the piston out and check it out if you want but I doubt its your piston.

I mean hey its piston slap live with it with sound hecka like its gonna break though O_o but I'm not saying you have piston slap.

so you had the valvetrain redone and it still gave you those whack numbers? I had my valvetrain rebuilt and I did a compression test and all my numbers came out even. before the two outer ones were higher than the middle ones.

good luck dude. the rings look fine on that piston.

Well it's looking like my bottom end is just fine.. I'm thinking maybe i have a warped head or some bad valves or something isn't right with the head....

I don't think i should take my pistons out they look fine... and the grease test turned out... anybody have a good head they want to sell me?

I agree it looks to me that the rings are doing there job. I think you might have a cracked head. Clean it really good and flip it upside down and fill the combustion chamber with a really light weight oil like 0w and see if any leaks out either through the valve seats or ect..

Dude, thats a pain in the arse.

Turn the crank until all the pistons are centered, and put a good amount of motor oil in each cylender and let it sit. If the oil level drops in any of the cylenders in 48 hours you have bad rings in that cylender. Its that easy.

While you have the head off take it to be cleaned and checked for trueness. good luck! emoji

They aren't total seal rings.... so the oil will leak right through... this won't work... at least i don't think it will.. i will try it anyhow saying i have some extra oil laying around... the machine shop said that some oil will leak through because of the gap in the rings.

Make sure you clean every last drop of that grease out of there. There will be a film left on the rings and cylinders and you dont want that stuff in there. Anyone that knows much about building motors would NEVER put it in a motor. That stuff dont break down easy, it just plugs things like the oil passages in crank are a good example. Dont worry about it, just clean it really good and never put that stuff where it can find a way into your oil.
Peace
