#5813, "What is your opinion...?"

I am about to have in my posesion a complete turbo setup off a 91 Talon Tsi Awd. That includes the 14b turbo, manifold, fuel injectors, computer, blowoff valve, intercooler and anything else you can imagine. My question is, would it be feasible to install this on a 97 Eclipse RS with the 420a motor? What all can I use from the talon and what all will I have to buy? Has anyone done this?
Any response would be greatly appreciated,
Michael

Okay, first off, did you pay for this setup? If so, how much?

Secondly, there is very little you will be able to use. The turbo, yes, but only with a fabricated manifold, or I think someone has actually made a homemade kit with one using the stock exhaust downpipe, was this Wheatking?

ECU - Nope
Manifold - Doubtful, but I have never seen one to compare
Injectors - Nope, they are a different impedence
BOV - Yes, but why? Almost all 2G 4G63 owners replace these with crushed 1G BOVs or an aftermarket one due to the stock 2G plastic BOV unable to maintain the stock (12psi) or higher boost level
SMIC - Yes, but you can custom make a FMIC for under $500 with piping. Your call.
Etc. - Unknown, since they are not listed.

Ultimately, if you have to ask these questions (please don't take this the wrong way) I hope you are not going to personally make a backyard turbo kit without someone else with an extensive knowledge of turbos helping. I certainly don't mean to demean you or your mechanical aptitude, I would just hate to see another fellow 420A owner blow their motor due to boost.

Keep us posted. And once again don't take my comment as something meant as anything other than a helpful comment.

OK... Interesting question...

I have thought about this several times, and I would do it on my "other" eclipse for fun should I get one some day....

OK assuming that you have access to a welder and some other tools.. I am also assuiming the most "money-efficient" method..

Stuff you can use from GSX:
Turbo
Intercooler
Blow-off Valve
Some piping

One of the "main" components that you are missing is an exhaust manifold that fits our cars. There are a few ways you can go about this....

A - You can make one (Have fun!)
B - You can try to buy one... Doubt anyone would sell one by itself, and anyway the only one that *might* work with your turbo is Star's/Hahn's - I forget who the 1G Turbo is made by.
C - You can use the Stock Exhaust Manifold, port it a little, match it up to the turbo, pull out the welder and get Busy! This is the cheapest way by far, and I am pretty sure that it would work. It will make the piping interesting too.

Next you need a downpipe... The GSX one *might* fit (but then again your exhaust manifold might be aimed at a different angle from the GSX's... Still you only really need the part that connects to the exhaust housing of the turbo then you can cut the rest off and add a piece of piping to connect the downpipe to your existing downpipe...

Back to the air intake.... You'll need a piece of PVC pipe from a hardware store.. get it about 1.5ft long, fit it on the car, cut to dimension and mount a filter at the other end (any open element filter eill do at this point). Clamp it on to the turbo intake turbine side.

Intercooler.. Now here is where you have a choice. You can either choose to go intercooled or non-intercooled (alot less trouble).

Should you go Intercooled, you first have to find a suitable location for the intercooler. Try the oppositte side of the stock 2G GSX location. You will most probably need to make some mounting brackets (easy if you have bits of metal, a drill and a welder) to mount it.

Next, you have to figure out the piping from the turbo to the intercooler and then to the throttle body. To save money and time, I would use PVC pipes again.
It wil be troublesome, but *really* cheap to make. And finally at some point, you will have to make some space on the pipe going to the intake for the Blow-Off valve.

Things to note...

- You still need to ensure that the Car gets enough fuel...
- You need to hook up oil cooling to the turbo (Water cooling would be good too)
- This is a *really* *really* *really* ghetto setup
- This will work if you have some patience and some ingenuity
- You may need a new wastegate srping because the boost level may be too high.
- I am not Liable for anything bla bla bla
- You can have a turbo in your car for less than $100 (excluding fuel mods, and assuming that the turbo gear was free)

Good Luck!
