O-K guys, I'm starting to get frustrated here. I finally finished my iol feed to and from my turbo. all that is left is to have my downpipe and intercooler piping fabbed. well, I thought that I would start her up and see if I have any leaks anywhere. it started and idled well. fuel pressure stayed steady. no oil or fuel leaks anywhere
so I rev it up from the throttle connection just a bit, and get hit in the face with a sh*t load of oil. WTF!
so here's my question. on a brand new turbo, does it have to have some back pressure to seat any seals? have any of you had this problem where it righted itself with time? what other than bad seals could cause it to do this?

Mine lost a bit of oil from the seals cause my drain flange was mounted too low in the oil pan. Not anymore

Yeah, when the oil leaves the turbo its no longer presurized, it needs gravity and a free flowing path to drain back into the oil pan. If the fitting is too low on the pan the oil will backup in the turbo and cause all kinds of issues.

If the turbo is new and the shaft isn't loose and bouncing off the housings, but oil is coming out of it chances are you can correct the problem without even taking the turbo back off the car.
The seals within the turbo are not meant to hold back a bearing housing that has become full of oil. They are designed to sling the oil mist and spray within the bearing housing away from the point where the shaft comes out each end. If the bearing housing becomes full of oil it will ooze out past even brand new seal rings.
The oil should freely drain out of the bearing housing as quickly as the engine supplies it. This is why the drain tube is so much larger than the supply tube. Gravity is the only force moving the oil out of the turbocharger. Any slight restriction in the oil drain tube, even a small silicone dingle berry, can slightly impede the draining of the oil and cause oil to back up into the bearing housing.
Sorry I plagerized ^^^ from FP. Also another thing of note is that many people that install a turbocharger don't realize that you need to crank the motor over 30-40 secs (in intervals of 10sec) to get the bearing section lubricated (get oil in there). If you just install a turbo pull out the relays for spark and fuel and crank it a number of times the oil pump will pressurize and get some oil into the bearing section of the turbo. This will prevent any premature wear when you start it up the first time because the turbo will spin right away ... even if there isn't any oil in it (though not for long unless oil gets in there)

Or, when you first get the turbo, turn it upside down and fill the oil drain with oil, and keep adding it slowly until you see it come out of the inlet (takes awhile).

Thura, Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. do you think that the lack of pressure on the compressor would add to my problem (running without the intake pipe attached)?
