This might be an old question, but as things change constantly I'm gonna post it anyway, hopefully I won't be bugging the hell out of anyone.

I'm starting to collect parts for my turbo setup, and I'm curious as to what turbo I should use. My car is gonna have a 2.2L stroker engine with forged internals, and I'm aiming for a target range of ~300-350 hp. I've been told it's realistic by the people at ARD, but if they were mistaken please correct me.

Anyway, I'm looking for a turbo that's durable, well crafted, and fast spooling (I'll be using Crane #14 cams also, or at least I plan to so far). Can you guys give me a breakdown of what all you have/have had/would like to have, what kicks ass and what doesn't about it, and what the going price is these days (a link or a contact to buy wouldn't hurt either ;P)? I'd appreciate the hell out of it emoji

-Corey

If you really want to find the perfect turbo, ask several different turbo manufacturers for the compressor maps of the turbos they sell. One turbo may be perfect for one car, but far from perfect for the next. You want to find the compressor map that matches your goals the best (i.e. have the turbo be the most efficient where you will be boosting the most). If you have never seen compressor maps, here is an example: http://web.inter.nl.net/users/turbo-team-europe/compress.htm

There are several write-ups on the net that will explain how to read them. Just run a search and you'll figure it out emoji .

Check out ETX's thread about his dyno session at VT. That is about 350 hp at the crank. That is a 2.0l, 8.8:1 comp, and #14 cams at 15-16 psi. I think he has a S16G Hahn kit. So, your goals are very attainable.

I think you are going to be limited by a fmu type fuel system if that is the route you choose. If that is the case, choosing a turbo is easy since you cannot flow massive amounts of air.

It also comes down to how much money you can spend. Big 16G turbo is inexpensive and can easily support those HP goals. There are also different wheels that can be swapped out to make that 16G flow massive amounts of air. It all costs more money. I think if you are using an internal gate, then a mitsu turbo is a great choice.
http://www.forcedperformance.net/ They have some killer hybrid turbos with mitsu flange. Also, don't rule out a 20G as a friend of mine made 380whp from 22psi and pump gas(little toulene mixed in). He did have a fully built 4g63 7-bolt(nonstroker) with ported head and cams(HKS 272). And yes it eventually walked on him.

If you want a garrett T3/T4 turbo with external gate, then check out these bad mother fockers. If I wasn't already getting a deal on a turbonetics hybrid, I would have one of these bolted on my manifold. FMU fuel systems need not apply.

A good friend of mine is in pretty deep with them right now. He was a majestic turbo fan, but remember warranty issues being a hassle.

I wonder if it will bolt up to a hahn mani? I wonder if it will clear the radiator! muahahah

edit:
Here is a cheap s16g on ebay in need of a rebuild. You could really save some money going this route, you just need to pickup a rebuild kit.
