I just installed a turboxs type-h bov to replace the 3kgt one from the hahn kit. I don't know what compressor surge sounds like but the sound its making worries me, not that its a bad sound its just different. It still has that woooosh, but it also sometimes at low settings makes a weird sound, it sounds like one of those silly air horns little kids have on thier bikes. Is that compressor surge? I did not install any washers in it... Also I searched and didn't really find an explanation of the sound im hearing. thanks!

compressor surge sounds sort of like -> ju ju ju.....if the type H is as stiff as the RFL then a small amount of surge at low boost is going to happen...

BAH! unacceptable!
The rfl is almost the same i think, it just has that amplifier on it. Ill try loosening the top to release the spring. I really want to retain the life of my turbo...

I just went for another drive. The noise sounds like a shitty air horn. I really want to be sure my turbo stays happy. I loosened the top of the type-h to loosen up the spring but it still does it. I have 0 shaft play right now and I would like to keep it that way for as long as possable.

Open your hood, and manually rev the motor up and release the throttle plate quickly. You should be able to see the BOV piston open up. If its not, then its too tight. The sound you hear is prob "fluttering". My XS type S did that.. I just took out all the washers. You basically want the BOV to open any time you let off the gas quickly, EVEN if you are at like 5 hg's of vac. A fluttering BOV will eventally damage the turbo because of compressor surge. YOu should be able to make the BOV fully go off when you just rev and let off the gas...if not, its too tight.. I have also used some normal motor oil on the BOV piston, that helps flutter also. Makes for a better seal too.

Ok i just checked it. When i rev and my vac goes up I can see the pison open up a bit. I cut the spring to loosen it up a bit. I am still getting the loud air horn sound when i boost and let go of the throttle. I really think this is comp surge, but I am not sure. It seems to open fine at ~1 psi, but at higher boost levels it makes that loud horn noise. Mabye this is just a noise this bov makes, but it dosent always do it. errrr, this is stressing me out. I dont want to buy a new turbo.

Don't stress. Like Matt said, the fluttering BOV noise is normal. It sounds like a turkey gobble sort of. If the blow off valve is fluttering, that doesn't mean that you're getting compressor surge.

Yeah its not just like woo woo woosh, its more like one of those horns that clowns blow off in your face. Too bad you moved dude, I would be dragin your ass to VT tomarrow to listen to it. I just want to be sure everything is cool cause I only have an hour of dyno time tomarrow.
So i just put the filter on the turbo. I really didn't want to, but it seems to have helped. It only made the honk noise once on a drive around the block, appose to the previous run it did it about 50% of the time. I don't understand how that helps, dosen't make any since to me! heh
This 8 injector setup is sooooo good!

You wouldn't have to drag me there. I used to spend 1/2 the day there anyway. Oh, and most of the night too..... and about 1/2 the morning hahahahaha. Seriously though, have fun on the dyno tomorrow. Tell nick I say hi and damn him for selling my brother his 2.5 4g64 . Also, mention to nick that you use the same setup as I did. He knows how to tune with it pretty well.
