#56469, "Turbo standalone oil pump?"

Is there anything out there for sale instead of tapping the oil pan and running lines for the turbos oil and return lines. Like a standalone oil system for the turbo? What would it be called?

I don't know...but that's an interesting idea. No sure if it would be benificial other then not having to alter your oil pan. You would need an electric oil pump...I would suggest an oil cooler and a filter, and a resisivor(SP)and the lines. Actually it kind of sounds like a PITA now that I think my way through it. But if you decide to go that route let me know how it works out emoji

why would you tap the oil pan to get fresh oil to the turbo? the oil pan oil is not fresh, sometimes it even has small metal shavings in it. you would want to run it through the filter first (at least i would anyway) clean oil in your turbo only

this would have been done already if it were a stupendous idea. our cars can supply the turbo just fine with oil, its just a tap into our cars current oil supply

only thing i can think is having some sort of electric pump that went though the turbo and back into its own reserve tank, that way the oil would be cooler and you wouldnt have to change it as much

good idea definately!! but you dont want it to have anything to do with your car's oil pan imo.

would oil pressure have any effect on this or not?

um... hello smart.

you dont tap the pan to get oil to the turbo. thats for the return line. you get oil from the back of the block (which is filtered oil) and that feeds to oil to the turbo. the oil would get cooled off easier i would think when it goes to the oil pan due to the fact that there is more room for it to cool down, air goes near it to cool it off, and the mixes with the other oil, to cool down more. you worried about tapping the oil pan, and all the lines from that (2)??? just imagine doing something noone else does, and running all the shit for that work work. just me thinking outloud here.

>um... hello smart.

, dont be a dick

i think a whole separate means of supplying oil would be a better idea. some kind of oil pump with its own oil that went straight in the turbo and back to the pump. theres no other reasonable way to do it besides the way we do it already.

I really like the idea. It bothers me that a failure in the motor can kill a turbo that might cost the same amount as the motor. I think that it would be a great way to minimize the risk on a perfectly good turbo, not to mention that you can do a better job of filtering the oil. I really like the idea, myself.

yeah but whos going to do it? One idea would be a dry sump system? ( is that what they are called?) . so what are the options? running a pump off the belts? ( more parasitic loss) or electrcal? ( bigger load on our already loaded alternators. To say that this will reduce the chance of damage to the turbo in case of engine failure is a bit too optemistic isnt it? with either of those setups the pump would shut off if the engine did. Why not get to work on a blower if thats what you want.. emoji then theres the part of it being a prototype and reliable? not gonna happen soon. Dont get me wrong im interested and all for it myself just things to think about. Ok im tired emoji

Interesting idea. First thing that popped in my head would be to relocate the battry to the trunk. Build a small oil resevoir with a electric pump that passes the oil through a filter, then through an oil cooler, then to the turbo. The chance of the pump failing would be my concern. What if you installed a oil pressure gauge in the system to monitor the pump?

Interesting Idea....how much oil would be necessary in a stand alone system like that?

it would definately work....i still dont see the point of it though. the way its set up now works fine. i thought about the battery relocating too. the pump could run off an extra battery you had in the trunk, maybe?

Good question...probably at least 3 or 4 quarts depending on line length...oil resivor size and cooler size. Also how often would you change it?? I suppose you could take in a sample to get analized to see how much life it had every couple of thousand miles or so. Like I said...sounds like a PITA...but it's an interesting idea.

Well, keep in mind that I am a huge fan of dry sump setups for the whole motor. It would be nice to have the turbo and the motor on different circuits, though, as the oil requirements for any turbo, especially a ball bearing turbo, are far different from those of a motor. Oil contamination in a turbo is also much less likely. This setup, with electric pumps, would be a good alternative to compromising on a turbo's oil supply.
It would be better for the motor, too, by the way.
