#55911, "Car Died on the Road HELP me ( electrical )?"
Sep-09-03 07:12 PM by pn0ymahal

ok today i was on my way to school. took a turn sorta fast and during the turn i felt a loss of power. gave it more gas coming out of the turn nothing. no power. rpm everything dead. well so i turn to the right with whatever power is left and stop. try to start it nothing. the lights on my dash etc turn on like normal. no hrc inline noise, no clicking nothing. i pop the hood my main motor fuse 30a to the left top is blown. so replace that with a new one, and i also find my power wire for my relay for the fuel pump not connected to the battary anymore so i put it back on ( wondering how it got off the power side of the battary ).... try to start it nothing no hrc fuel pump noise, and pop the fuse. i check the egr (looking) nothing looks wrong with it and nothing is really touching the egr tube the hot gold thing ( except the egr vacuum line a little )... so far everything looks ok nothing is touching metal, everything plug in.. since my power wire was off the battery could this have killed my inline or intake fuel pumps? also i was thinking maybe a sensor?.. i tried to fix it while there was light, but it got to dark so i towed it home. any advice would be good. oh yah the 30a motor fuse was smoking when it blew again. also just a fyi today i had to move the fuse box in the engine bay around a litle nothing major car ran fine right after i put the fuse box back..
any info would be great.
thanks guys

SOunds like an electrical short somewhere. Try to follow all wires in the engine bay. I had the same problem as you before, car would just shut off as I was driving. Ended up being a wire was shorting out in the engine bay....

im tired working on it. so far nothing. engine wires all look good, under the car looks fine etc etc. the extra wire i said came out of the battery was for my 8-injector deal. it powers the eic and relay etc or was it for the pump? i think for the eic ecu.. shit im tired. im going to look under my dash in the car for a loose wire.. i think i got 5million wires under the dash. =(
i ruled out the ignition ( crane ) put that back to stock.. anything else guys?

why do you think its the alternator? that fuse is ok?? wires on it look fine..
also talked with Dan and what he told me to try is this. remove all add ons to the ecu wires ( i got alot ) .. and then put a fuse in, try to start it ( of course it wont start ) and see if the fuse blows. if the fuse does not blow reconnect one wire at a time till it does. also if the fuse blows after i remove all my add on wires to the ecu wires remove all the sensor to the block etc etc and try to start it with a new fuse and see if it pops and if not add one sensor at a time etc. sound good to you all?
sounds good to me..hehe..
any ideas?

I've never seen SO many wires spliced into... and I was a car audio installer for a couple years emoji

So yeah, alternator is fine, only fuse blowing is the "motor" 30a one.

If the ECU is connected, the fuse blows. If not, it stays intact. So, definitely gonna have to clean up and rewire all those ECU splices. One of em is shorting somewhere.

Good luck man...

yo dan check your text message if you did not yet.
i removed all the extra wires attach to the ecu wires , and i did not connect both ends if it had a wires attach to it. and when i plugged it back into the ecu and put a good 30a fuse and tried to start it, it blew the fuse again. same old thing. so what do you think now? i guess my next step is to remove all engine sensor plugs from there sensors and try it one more time with putting a new 30a fuse in and see if its one of the engine sensors? i think thats all i got left to narrow this problem down.. do you guys got any other info i can try out? strauss just wondering what wire grounded on your car? location etc the type of wire? and what did it touch?
any info would be nice guys..
oh yah how many sensors/plugs are there?

hrm. electrical problems are the WORST! every time I do something electrical im always sure to do it right and secure it properly to avoid this type of thing. I'm sure you have also!

Could you swap in a different ecu? its worth a shot. And also i know you said you checked your alternator but i have seen people pull too much amperage with aftermarket electronics that literally fry the copper fitting from the wire on the alternator and the wire drops down onto the frame and shorts out. good luck man! emoji

no extra 99 gs 420a ecu to use local. also when i checked the alternator i just looked around making sure the wires etc where connected. so if no wire from the alternator is removed then the alternator should be good?
im not sure whatelse to check/do?

normally a short in the electrical system reflects on theintegrity of the alternator, you might just need to rebuild it. theres a little thingy in there (forgot what its called, like a diode thing ro something) that fried when u have a short. might be your ECU too, or maybe the starter isnt grounded properly, or the positive terminal on the startr grounded and fried it

let me come take a look man....i bet i'll figure it out

The alternator is good.
It is not the alternator.
The alternator is not shorting.
We wired up the alternator and it worked fine.
The alternator has its own fuse. It is not blown.
Did I mention nothing was wrong with the alternator? emoji

Since it is the ECU that is shorting, and
Since you removed all aftermarket splices from the ECU,

It must be either (in order of likelihood):
-One of the engine sensors. (Disconnect them all)
-The ECU itself. (Replace with known good one)
-The Factory ECU wiring harness grounded somewhere (Repair/replace)

Btw, my ECU is a 1999 ATX, and there's no difference between a GS and RS ECU. You can try it once you've ruled out sensors, and after friday night.

dan.. i just im/text you. so far pulled out all 10 sensors about only from the top of the engine along with the 3 relays near the battery. put a new 30a fuse in and it did not blow. so i put the plug for the coil in and it did not blow yet. right now im taking a little break since i feel like hitting the car =(.. so yah.. thats my setup as of right now.
also i notice i found two blown fuses under my dash and i replaced those and it did not blow.

i plug all the sensors back in and only when i plug the middle relay ( auto tranny car ) near the battery it blows the 30a motor fuse. i think that relay is the MFI ( ASD ) relay.

mike, if it is the asd relay, make sure the little capacitor that is connected to the coil and the block. If that shell is not grounded you will blow the fuse. I have a known good asd relay if you wanna try that, but i don't thin that is it. follow the wires on the asd relay. that relay controls the power to your MFI system.

The noise induction capacitor is in place, and bolted in the factory location at the front top right corner of the block.

Unknown if it has a loose ground or if the connector is bad but it's there.

FYI CVedeclipse has been running for weeks with no capacitor on his 1995 block and doesnt get a CEL either. Satan says that cap is purely to reduce noise/hum from the motor from being heard in the audio system.

He also tried a new MFI relay and it's still shorting.

So what do you guys think? What exactly is connected to the MFI system?
Injectors...
Coil pack...
What else?

only thing i can find so far is.. disconnect plug behind the water washer and brake fluid which i can not really see well and does not look like any other plug of sort is in site. i think its a white connector/plug?... hmmm i just put the ecu wires all back to stock nothing tap etc to them. looked at every single wire on the ecu and felt to see if its open and thats ok. removed battery and looked around all seems nice. looked behind intake manifold and around injectors seems ok. what does the asd relay control? fuel and ignition, and alternator?.. i notice the little capacitor on the top part of the engine block had one wire? coming out and it seems like its touching the block a little ( maybe ).. not sure if thats ok? i know a cap hold power right? so is it postive power? i really am so confused.. i feel like getting a hammer and hitting it and all. =(

well what i thought was nothing was the problem. it was the cap on the block, at the top. the direction of which way the wire was coming out from was towards the tranny side and i thought 'maybe'. so i took of the bolt and put the wire right up to my eye and say a very very small open section where you can see the bare wire within. so i said, 'maybe' then fixed it, and turn the cap with the wire the other direction. so i tried to go crank it, and i heard the best noise in the world ( my hrc fuel pump ) and i checked my 30a motor fuse and it was not blown. so i hooked and wired everything back up and it started. emoji
