#55654, "Car is lacking power....need help!"

Alright, I'll try to explain this the best I can. I just got my car put back together and am having some problems. First, here's my set-up:

SFMU with 3.62 disk
stock injectors
fuel pressure 48psi at idle
crane ignition
built bottom end(8.8:1)

First off, my car is idleing real funky. If you have ever heard a de-honeycombed 4g63, thats what it sounds like, like it's cammed or something. My vac is only at 10-12 at idle and my timing marks line up perfect on the cam gears. My car also has been backfiring occasionaly during downshifts, when it never did before. When I nail on it, power comes on nice....but seems to "flatten" out from 5K up. A/F is looking good all the way(.90-.92) @ 10psi. My car isn't breaking the tires loose from a 40mph roll anymore....it used to spinout like crazy. But, I think that might have to do with the limited slip I installed this time around. I tried changing my MAP sensor and cam angle sensor for the hell of it, and nothing changed. I tried installing my 440 injectors and the car was flooded like crazy. Poored out black smoke at idle with 15psi fuel pressure. I would have to give the car gas for it to even start, and would not idle if I let the revs drop below 2K. And when it was "running" with the 440's, it sounded like it was on 3 cylinders. I put the stockers back in and now she runs.....but still choppy like I stated above. When I'm cruising though, it seems nice and smooth......but the car is doggish 2.5K and below. I'm thinking some sensor or something is screwed up but I'm all lost right now. I haven't posted in here about it until I went over everything I already knew to check. Could you guys point me to some areas to check? Thanks guys......sorry for the length, but my car has got some issues right now emoji

Are you getting any Rich CEL?

Your 10-12 mmHg vaccum is hinting that a possible timing belt misalignment may be the culprit. Double check the three timing marks, after you disconnect the crane emoji

Also check for vaccum leaks as well.

Timing is on....I will have to try taking out the Crane I guess. It just doesn't seem to be the culprit.......what the hell though emoji

Did you have your head milled during the rebuild process? If you did and they took a lot off, your timing will be off even if the marks are lined up.

I have the same problem at start up. I have the stock injectors and it runs rich as a motherfucker at idle. To start the car I have to floor it and let it idle at about 2k for a minute or so. I dont have a CEL anymore but when I did it was for the coolant temp sensor. Weird, huh?

Any other ideas from the other experts on the board??? I still have to take out the Crane.....thats gonna be a messy job. Also, if I rev it up hard in neutral to about 5-6K, revs will drop real slow down to 4K and stick there for about 10sec, then drop slowly back down to it's extreme choppy idle. The car is definitly not as fast as last year as it sits currently. I'm not sure whether it has to do with this idle problem or not. I did some runs against my buddies 95 Tsi that runs consistent 13.9's at 95mph. We did a few ~30mph roll ons and I would only be up about 4 cars approaching 120mph. Before, I could have that many cars on him by 80mph.....and the faster we got...the uglier it got. My car must only be trapping a little over 100 now, guessing 100-102mph. Something is not right...between the shitty idle and loss of power, I just have no clue what the hell it is. If anybody has some in depth thought as to what may be going on, feel free to email me or post here. Thanks a bunch guys.....this is just sooooo frustrating!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I also have the SAFC in there and did some porting on the exhaust ports of the head. All I did was took the "bumps" out of the exhaust ports. Just food for thought......

to me it sounds like an iginition problem, like said above, try trouble shooting starting from your Crane ignition, then spark plug wires, then the coil (resistances), and last i don't know if you do this, but everytime you mod something in your engine, make sure to reset your computer to always have it self adjust at idle for 5min or till normal operating temp so the computer adjusts with your new mods. hope this works.

My MSD did that to my car. I would try with taking out the crane as well. It seems these ignition boxes have a high failure rate and really screw with our cars.

I agree the ignition may be the biggest part of your dillema, however after noticing that you are running stock injectors (depending on how much boost and how long you've been turbo with them), the injectors may be tired and no longer spray consistantly. A couple of years ago I was having similar issues on a stock ignition, went to new 30lb Accels, then everything ran smoothly to 7000.

420a and ej20... both with boost

also anything messing with your map sensor might f things up. I had some probs with the cheap electronic map sensor limiter. Made me run exactly like you said, i would have to hold the gas down bit on start up and keep it above 2k revs. Too much fuel. How old is your front o2? as for the idle vac... most stay about 16-18.

Are you 100% sure the crank isnt one tooth off the cams. That is what it sounds like to me.

Well, took the Crane out and nothing changed. Tonight we will check the timing again and if that isn't it, I may change my coil pack for the hell of it. Starting to run out of options here.....
