#5477, "HP and internals questions?"

Hey, i'm looking to go turbo within a few months, most likely the star stage II ball bearing =). Anyway i read that our engines can handle about 300 hp before any mods need to be done. I was wondering, apx. how much hp do you gain with the stage II and also if i started adding things like a UDP, cam gears etc. How long could i go with out needing new rod's and piston's etc.. Thanks

If you stay at the recomended boost levels (7psi) you will be fine.

Those are some pretty tricky questions. Power levels are variable, depending on what kind of boost you are running. Yeah, our engines are good for 300hp with stock internals, but only when properly tuned. We have guys here that have blown engines on Stage one kits running 3-5 psi, then we have guys here running 10-14 psi for extremely long periods of time with no problems. The key is tuning. Making absolutely sure you are getting enough fuel when under boost and preventative maintenance. Watching your gauges, checking vacuum lines, etc etc. Personally on a stock engine I wouldnt run more than 8psi daily. With the Star kit you shouldnt even run that. The intank Walboro cant keep up at 8psi due to the 100+ psi fuel pressures. With the addition of an inline (accell, airtex) more boost can be had. Ahem, now for a plug. You need to check on Wyatt's post about the New Edge Racing turbo kit. Best of both worlds with customized options at an untouchable price. With that said, good luck.

Actually...I think you should consider the NE Kit instead of the Star kit. It's the best of both worlds!! I'm thinking about switching myself. But you should not go any higher then 7-8psi because your engine ( no matter how good of condition it is ) can not handle it for too long. I boosted 10psi on my engine about 4-5 times and it blew u emoji Well, I'm not sure yet exactly what happened, but it only has 23,000 miles on it, so it was in VERY GOOD SHAPE!!! Just be careful.

oh...and when that happened, I had plenty of fuel...so I don't think fuel is an issue with Star.

Well, you think your engine was in excellent shape. But was it? It may have had some internal weakness. JasonGS on this board runs 10 psi regularly and has been boosting 8+ psi for a very long time with no problems. I know Joe was boosting 12psi with slightly lowered compression. But to be safe, not boosting over 8psi daily is a good rule to go by. But by saying our engines cant handle it for long is a false statement. Your engine couldnt handle it for long. You may have had a weak piston/ring. Hell, your gauges could've been off for all we know. If you look back at all the people who have blown engines, in most cases its human error or something other than internals failing. I believe with the proper amount of fuel and ignition timing and over all state of tuning that our engines can handle 10psi safely for extended periods of time. I believe HRC will agree with me on that.

well, actually i don't boost 10 PSI all the time. When i am at the track, i boost 10 PSI, or if i dump some octane booster in the tank, i'll crank it up, but for daily driving, i turn it down to about 6-7 Psi. It ain't worth risking it blowing it up. I think our internals can handle 10 PSI no problem, in fact, i think they could handle 14 PSI with proper amounts of fuel and ignition retard. They might not last long, but i'll find out hopefully. As far as safe boost levels, i would say 8 is max for the street, unless you have some ignition retard, and you are absolutely sure you have plenty of fuel. Make sure you have an EGT, and you pay attention to it. 10 PSI on these kits could be easily attainable i think. just with some little extras. maybe some 310 cc injectors?

I agree with some people on this board, I think it was Stan who stated it. These are two different turbo kits. Star's flows more air then HRC's do to the larger FMU Pipes and larger turbo. So 10 psi on the HRC is like maybe 300hp where as 10psi on Star is more like 310hp. These are not real numbers and I could be wrong, but it makes since to me. And all I was saying is that the NE kit is basicly the same as the Star. Both come with a large T3/T4 turbo, which also pushes more air then HRC's turbo's.

But you could be right Saber...I could have had a weak ring or something. Actually that's what I think happened. But all I was saying is that I had plenty of fuel, at least that's what my gauge was reading. It could have been ignition timing like you said or something else like oil pressure?? I don't know??? I'm just saying untill these kit's are fully tested, I would not recomend boosting higher then 7-8psi.

OK, i'm not going to be able to get the loot for a few months anyway, so this is good, i might get the NE turbo. I'm still new with the whole turbo thing, but you guys seem to know alot, so i'll keep reading. Thanks
