Well I thin kthere was a post a whil back that explained this much better than I am about to.
Ignition timing is at what point the spark plug fires. We'll say that the spark plug fires when the piston is at the top of it's travel and ignited the A/F mixture and drives the piston down. If you advance the timing the spark plug wil fire after the piston has started it's down stroke. If you retard the timing it will fire the spark plug before the piston reaches the top of it's upstroke.
Hope this helps. If you run a high octane(burns slower and resists detonation better than low octane) You can retard timing. But I don't think unless you start running some really high boost you'll hav eto worry about messing with ignition timing.
