Hey guys,
Do any of you auto guys experience high EGT's with your HRC kits? I had a stage 1 and the AF ratios seemed to be fine, the boost was at 5 PSI, but no matter what, my EGT's would go passed 1600 by 5K rpm.... maybe even less. I got a SMIC from a stock turbo eclipse and i hooked it up and it cooled stuff down, but when I turned it up to 7 PSI, it got hot again and barely holds under 1600 till redline... sometimes it gets too hot at liek 5-6K.

After talkign to lots of people and realizing my setup is good, I think its the tranny. I know the autos cause shitloads of heat but I can't imagine it affecting it sooooo much. I do have a tranny cooler.

One thing I'm gonna change are my injectors... I got 30lbers. If I increase the fuel pressures, even on the stock injectors, the temps do go down but then I'm runnign rich and losing out on potential power.

Bottom line: I think its the tranny... could there be something wrong with the tranny? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Larger injectors, and more fuel will cure the problem. Just remember, more fuel = cooler temps, less fuel = more heat.

Its not the tranny. emoji

what exactly is your fuel setup, and what fp are you tuning at w/ it?

what tranny u have connected to the motor wont effect egts, unless something is really wrong and loading up the engine

You need a tune-up with larger injectors.

Ok... I guess then its not the tranny... emoji Well i forgot to mention that I have the SFMU and I have to set it at like 60 PSI - 65 PSI AT LEAST to keep temps down at 7 PSI boost with SMIC.... I realized like ^^^ said, I need more fuel to lower temps...

the only thing I can imagine (and I suspect this the most now) is that my injectors may be going bad... thats why its hot. Do you think its probably the problem?

By the way... when i get my 30lb. injectors, what should the idle PSI be on the SMFU.. I am stage 2 HRC with a auto tranny and SMIC. Thanks.

YOUR INJECTORS ARE PROBABLY NOT THE PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE LOW BOOST YOU ARE RUNNING. SOMETIMES TOO MUCH FUEL PRESSURE WILL CAUSE HIGHER EGT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE FUEL IS AFTERBURNING, IT IS IGNITING INSIDE THE TURBO MANIFOLD AND CAUSING AN UNUSUALLY HIGH EGT.

TRY THIS: TURN FUEL PRESSURE UP UNTIL THE EGT GOES UP DUE TO THE AFTERBURN, THEN TURN IT DOWN GRADUALLY UNTIL THE EGT GOES DOWN. KEEP TURNING IT DOWN UNTIL THE EGT STARTS GOING UP AGAIN, AND THEN INCREASE FUEL PRESSURE UNTIL IT HOLDS AT A GOOD TEMP. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SITES ON HOW TO TUNE WITH AN EGT, JUST DO A SEARCH OR THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING IN THIS FORUM ABOUT IT.

BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRANNY.

Yep, definately sounds like afterburn, 65 psi is rediculously high, I was having it at 55 psi on stockers and EGTs went down when I cranked fuel pressure down to like 48.

ok well guys I turned down the fuel pressure to 48 and then 52 PSI... The EGT's in 1st gear (REMEMBER I'M AUTO) goes up to 1575 and then in the rest of the gear the needle sits at exactly 1600, which isnt good right? Well the problem is this is at 5 PSI boost AND I HAVE MY SMIC on... I would think the temps would be lower... I don't understand... it seems then if I didnt have the SMIC on the temps would be MUCH higher... but according to you guys my fuel pressures are good.

By the way... my 30lbers go in tomorrow..... for a stage 2 SMIC HRC kit with SFMU what PSI pressure should I be at then?

hmmm how many miles do you have on the car? A bad cat would cause allot of restriction and that could be causing raised EGT's as well.

After reading this I'm kinda freaking out now. Damn, I need an EGT.

Ok I'm an idiot... I never even knew you had to adjust the fuel pressures by taking off the vac line.... I always did it with the vac line on... could i have damaged the SFMU???

I took off the vac line and set the SFMU to 52-55 PSI and when i reconnect the vac line its at 40PSI... Is that good? cause if i increase it with the vac line on to 48, when i take the vac line off again, my static psi is increased as well (up to about 60 PSI again).

And even I tried both of the above, the temps didnt show any change... still get real close to 1600 in 1st and then sits at 1600 for the other gears. HELP!

By the way... I'm leaving to get my 30lb. injectors in now... Be back in a few hours... can anyone give me the complete settings I need for stage 2 SMIC with SFMU for 30 lbers.? thanks

I HAVE A GREDDY EGT GUAGE AND IT READS IN CELSIUS. 900 C IS AS HIGH AS YOU WANT TO GO. 1600F IS EQUAL TO 871 C. IF MY EGT ONLY SAW 871, I'D BE A HAPPY MOTHERFUCKER. I HAVE LET MINE GO TO 950C WICH IS 1767F. I KNOW THIS IS NOT GOOD BUT I DID IT FOR A LONG TIME. SOME OF THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN DUE TO AFTERBURN. ANYWAY, I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY ENGINE SMOKING, WHICH IS THE FIRTS THING THAT WILL HAPPEN AS YOUR PISTON RINGS WILL GO FIRST. ONE DAY MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT ME AND LET THE EGT GO UP TO 1050C, WHICH IS OVER 1900F. AFTER THAT THE CAR SMOKED LIKE A BITCH AND NEEDED A REBUILD, BUT NO MELTED PISTONS, ONLY BURNED RINGS, BUT I WAS RUNNING LOW COMP JE PISTONS, IF YOU HAVE STOCK STUFF ITS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IF YOU CAN KEEP IT RIGHT AROUND 1600F YOU ARE IN GOOD SHAPE.

ask someone who tunes with a gauge that reads in celsius. it is safe to go to 900c. that is 1671f. if you can stay below 1600, thats great, but going just a bit over is not going to hurt anything. and to remy, dont be a dick, dick.

Ok children... don't know what your problem is but he is correct, 900*c is about the highest you want to see on the EGT gauge. 925*c is the ABSOLUTE MAX, the point you'll melt pistons. I wouldn't run 900* all day long but I wouldn't worry too much about it for a second.

obviously your pistons are not gonna melt as soon as u hit 1600 but thats is the safe point . Going over that is dangerous. You said you have been around 1700 with no problems wtf. Keep that shit to yourself. If you wanna kill your engine do so alone. Dont try to bring others down with you. I stand by my statement. Do not go past 1600. Anything after that is bad.

I heard each psi is about 10hp or so...something like that to get a quick estimate of how many horses your car has. 4psi=40horses... 140+40=180. This is not even whp. Can you clear that up...even if you had other stuff, catback, udp, TB, whatever...I dont see that getting 211whp...

Star Stage 2 Turbo, TC2 front, TC1 sides and rear, Enkei Arashi Wheels, Carbon Blue Paint, Invador Hood, Reverse Indiglo gauges, other good stuff.

The dyno was done on a mobile chassis dyno, but as far as I know it was accurate. I am outrunning z-28's, mustang cobras, and similar cars and I don,t know if 180 hp would do that. I might be wrong, but I've got a dyno sheet that says 211. Unless of course my boost gauge is fucked up. Also finished 1/8th mile at 84 mph. I don't know if 180 horses in a 2800lb car would do that; don't ask what the et was, you know, wheelspin, 2.7 60ft.

I don't even like to get my EGTs up to 1500. I'm a stage 1 so I usually let off when I hit 1500 which is about at 90 or 95 mph and then the heat sort of stops raising or raises very slowly until I let off.

1600 to 1650 is the maximum SAFE temp. If you go above that, you are risking damage, especially on stock internals.
