#53924, "What can I do to Spool quicker?"

Hey I have a stage 3 with the star t3/t4 and an 8 injector setup. I am running like 15-16 psi but it takes forever to get there. What can I do to spool faster. I have an underdrive pulley and full 2.5in exhause all the way back. I was thinking about swapping out the cat for a testpipe. I have a jeep tb I need to mod some more to put on. Also can the jeep tb keep the jeep iac or should I put the eclipse one on? Also is there anyway to send a turbo out to have the bushings swapped out for ballbearings? Would porting the head bigger valves and turbo cams help at all? I just think the turbo is too damn big. My car owuld be so much quicker if i got decent boost at like 2k instead of 4.5k. Is anyone running in the 12's on pump gas or is this car never going to see it. I am starting to get discouraged. My friends with wrx's and rx7's seem to go alot quicker for alot less. Plus it looks like my trans is on its way out. It is getting very noisy. Are there any other options for a trans or should I try to find a low milage one? Mine has about 130k.
thanks
Paul

sorry to break it to you - unless you can somehow acquire a ball-bearing T25, it's not going to happen. getting 10 psi of boost around 3200 RPM's is a good goal though. with the S16G i get 10 psi at about 3100 RPM's and i still have a stock intake manifold and cylinder head. the best ways of improving spoolup are:

1. don't have a cat
2. have at least a 2.5" turbo-back exhaust (sounds like you're already there)
3. port and polish everything that has ever exsisted at any time anywhere
4. get some turbo grind cams
5. make sure you have NO boost leaks
6. make sure you have NO exhaust leaks (*especially* before the turbo)

>Is anyone running in the
>12's on pump gas...

not that i know of. i think that nitrous_97rs or whatever his name ran 12's on race gas. that's the lowest real 2GNT time that i know of, other than Bill Hahn Jr. himself.

>My friends with wrx's and rx7's
>seem to go alot quicker for alot less.

that has a tendency to happen. 2GNT's aren't exactly turbocharged from the factory, and turbocharging them is anything from the mainstream.

hmmmm... i think The1Bill has a spare transmission laying around his shop...

upgrade ur downpipe. I orderd a flange for a t3/t4 and i'm ordering all mandrel bent bends from Jc whitney in 3inch. I'm about done putting it together so i'll let u know how it does. but i would put a test pipe on atleast.

Granted that we don't know what inlet/outlet trims your t3/4 is...As mentioned above you may want to make sure that you do not have leaks, etc.. If all of that is fine, then it boils down to increasing and maintaining enough exhaust gas velocity into the turbo while allowing the gases to flow freely with minimal restriction. This "can" start with porting the head.. but depending on which turbo manifold you are running, you may want to look to see if you can improve upon the runner lengths and or porting it as an easier solution.. If done right, this will prove to be very worthwhile. After that I would reccommend making sure your down pipe is up to par, then go to a highflow cat or eliminator pipe. Once that's done, if you can.. follow it up by going to a 3" exhaust. You will have better spool up response from this..

exhaust is my business, so hopefully this is of help....

420a and ej20... both with boost

Are you sure your wastegate is functioning correctly? Even with a T3/T4, you should get a bit faster spool than 4500 rpm's...If your wastegate is slightly open when you are building boost, then that can lead to higher turbo lag. You want to keep that wastegate fully closed, until you reach your set boost level, then it should open up to regulate the exaust gas flow over the turbine. I dont have a T3/T4, but that just doesnt sound right..full boost between 3500 and 4000 sounds about right..

I agree with XtremeRS, you should be seeing higher boost levels around 3500. I'm running the 16G as well and that tends to be right about when the turbo kicks in. I'd be impatient with 4500 too.

Somone posted up a few weeks ago about their new 2.5DP and what a difference it made. I forget who, do a search. I'd trying changing your whole exhaust setup. Get a bigger DP made, put in a high-flow cat or test pipe, and upgrade to a 3" exhaust. You'll have no problem sellling your 2.5 to a N/A guy on this board. Good luck, let us know what happens.

you could throw on a 50 shot of nitrous to get it spooling.

Holy double posts, batman!! emoji

Anyways, I always recommend doing a boost leak check as well. Everyone once in a while, I'll notice my car is spooling just a tad slow. I'll do a leak test and just tighten some clamps, and voila! it spools up hella quick again.

(Leak test is acquiring a PVC pipe that clamps on to the intake of your turbo and is sealed completely with a vacuum line sticking out of the end. Merely attach your air compressor to that vacuum line and fill it up with air. Listen closely for hissing.)

Easiest way to do this is to buy a .48 AR T3 hotside from Turbonetics or Turbochargers.com, the STAR turbokit uses a .63 hotside, which is why it spools slower.

FYI, the 10cm/2 Super series turbos are .48A/R.
