#52871, "Purpose of a Turbo Timer!!!"

Now i am not what you would call a full blown rookie, but i am just easing my way into the world of turbos. Now come this winter i am going to be purchasing a Star Stage II Turbo Kit and right away upgrade the blow off valve to a Greddy Type S!! My question is if i would/should also need to purchase a turbo timer. And if so what does it exactly do and how do i install/work the beast!! emoji
Thanks!! emoji

a turbo timer keeps the engine running after the car is shut off so oil contintinues to flow thru the turbo. that way you don't have to sit in the car and wait

Turbo Timer
Turbo Timer is a must for any turbocharged vehicle. All Turbo Timers are designed to extend a turbocharger's life by allowing the engine to idle for a pre-set amount of time after the ignition key has been turned off and removed from the key cylinder. This permits the engine oil to circulate through the turbocharger bearing housing, drawing heat out of the bearings and impeller shaft to lower the temperature to a safe level before the engine is shut down.

if you have the money to buy a turbo timer, then yes you should get one to let the oil drain out of the turbo. if you dont have the money you can achieve the same effect by just letting the car idle for 3-4 mins after driving. your choice. turbo timer simply gives you a convienent way to automatically shut your car off when your not there.

heh hell dude, tell me what happens to YOUR turbo when you drain the oil out lol. i hope thats not really what you meant. the turbo timer does what everyone says it does, continues to circulate oil to cool down the turbo and bearings. my dad's new boss has a lingenfelter twin turbo vette and the guy's kid is a dumbass. i was asking if they installed a TT on it. his reply is as follows "TT's are just a snake oil product. they dont do anything, we just shut it off" i was like ok dumbass emoji he didnt even sit there and let it idle to cool down after we were pullin 140+mph runs on the highway

so im guessing if you own a 5 speed and you install a turbo timer, you'd have to leave it in nuetral while it was parked? what if you were on an incline/decline? emoji

the TT doesnt do that itself. the only thing the tt does is have the car run after the ignition is off and the key removed. This lets the oil still go to the turbo.

While your car is running and you are spooling that turbo is spinning hella fast and is running through alot of oil. Now, shut off the engine. Oil pump stops with the rest of the motor. That turbo is still spinning with no oil coming to it. Now, most turbos can handle a normal shut off if they arent glowing hot emoji. TT's keep the motor running so oil still gets the the turbo while it cools.

Turbo timers aren't as useful as they used to be. Go in any factory turbo forum, like say a WRX forum, and anytime someone asks this same question, all the veterans reply saying they are a waste of money. These guys have to know a bit about turbos. I don't think modern turbo's really need a turbo timer, but it's deffinately open for debate.

You could be like Uber up there and go with the ultra cheap KRTT system.

KRTT = Kamel Red Turbo Timer. You get there a couple minutes early and have a smoke while you wait for it to cool down. If you don't smoke, you could drink a beer instead. Same difference. emoji

turbo timers aren't needed..they all do the same thing so there isn't one that is like so much better than the other ones.. it's VERY easy to install. all you do is buy a harness with it and it plugs into your steering wheel harness and you run a wire to your ebrake..so when your ebrake is DOWN the turbo timer shuts off..it's like a theft system.. and yeah a turbo timer recirculates the oil so it doesn't coat inside your turbo thusfore deterioratting the life of your turbo. most turbo timers have extra features that make it pretty worthwhile to use.. i have a blitz full auto turbo timer.. it reads battery voltage, current temperature, can measure lap times, manual timer or auto timer..and i think that's it..maybe more.. i believe the apexi one has an o2 reading one or something? not sure.. but yeah they are only like 70-100b ucks so it's better being safe than sorry and letting your turbo cool down.

a little off topic but how come they don't have TT's tap into an EGT sensor or something since the whole idea is to keep the engine on long enough for the turbo to cool to a safe temp... or is the EGT probe usually not close enough to measure the changes in temp of the turbo itself? idk seems like it'd be a lot less complicated than how some TT's have different settings an stuff to calculate how long to let the engine idle.

Usually, when driving normally, not boosting really hard, parking the car, and letting it run for 30 sec to a minute is just fine. Problems can arrise when you do hard boosted runs, then immiediately shut off the motor. Oil can burn in side the bearings from just sitting there and getting so hot. Nowadays, esp if you use synthetic oil, its much harder to do that. I normally just let the engine idle till my EGTS drop to like 900 degrees, where it normally sits with the engine idleing for a bit. It turns out that it runs for about 30 seconds or so..if i have been doing some hard boosting, i let it sit for a minute or two..if its that long, i just engage my remote starter then leave the car, and then just shut off the remote starer a few minutes later. IMO, TT are a waste of money, but its more for convenience for those who do not want to wait a minute or two..

i dont know if i would call it a waste of money, as they serve other purposes than just timing the car down. the apexi reads a/f, o2, volts, and times the car down hehe. for about 100 bucks i think its pretty cool!
