#52762, "Star or Hahn's still cant decide!!!!!"

Hey Guys!!!!

I need help decideing which stage 2 turbo kit i should purchase!!! Now i have read posts on this site for about a month now and have still not come to a conclusion....Anyways what i am still wondering is 1) which kit is able to put out the most boost psi(how much??!!)and 2)which kit would be an overall best buy in the long run because i dont think i plan on going any farther than stage 2. I am leaning towards Star in the sense that it is alot cheaper than Hahn's kit and also includes a FMIC!!!! Any imput would be cool !!! Thanks!

Use a star kit and you are limited to about 7psi because of the size of the turbo and the limits of your stock injectors. The hahn kit is limited to 10 psi due to smaller turbo, the hahn will spool faster but the star can go further in upgrades to the engine before needing to upgrade the turbo to flow more. If you are installing yourself and have never done it before, find help if you are using star because the instructions suck. The hahn has good instructions aside from the fuel system, if I did not know how all that crap worked, I would have been lost on the fuel. Anyways, Star is a nice kit, just sucks to put in due to instructions, Hahn is a good kist as well but has a crappy FMU, you can make your own decision though.

slodsm what are you talking about? The star kit is not limited to 7psi because of the turbo. I'm running 16psi on it right now and it is fine. The only reason I'm not running more is because I have timing issues if I go any higher because I need an ignition system. Also, you'd have to do a lot of shit in order to have to upgrade the star turbo.

30lbs injectors, built bottom end and a S-AFC. I don't have the AFC correcting very much but it still messes with my timing a little.

I doubt anyone on here has modified their car enough, or can ( realisticaly guys c'mon) to the point where the t3/4 would not be efficient. Thats insane, look a couple of threads down to the comparison between the t3/4 and a 16G. Im not not saying you are completely wrong just missinformed.

Simple, this is REALLY old. but simple,

race = STAR
fun and serious later? = HRC

they both have their ups and down, wach sacrifices here and there , thats the companies faults. Thruth is the t3/4 can handle any boost your car can, more so. Yes it is an old design, but si is the turbine itself...uhm...images of a VATN...read up. Youll see the light.

I have looked over the online manuals on the installation of the Star kits and that kinda scared me off in the sense that the manual made it seem very hard to install. Now i believe that I would have the knowledge to install it but I still am a little gun shy about it becasue i dont want to shell out $3000 and end up installing it wrong and fucking the car over.....If anyone has installed a Stage II Star kit on their own i have some q's for ya...

1) Was the installation in your mind pretty smooth or was it bad??
2) In your opintion what was the hardest part of the install??
3) Other than the manual what other source did you find yourself using??

Thanks Guy for all your help!

Read my post again, he said that the turbo is as far as he wants to go, I replied that with star you are limited to the 7 due to the size of the turbo and his stock injectors. Meaning, the damn thing flows too much to boost any more, read a little more thorough before calling me a tard please.

i like the star myself. the instructions were vague but, i have zero turbo experience before then and i installed mine by myself (zero help) its a pain but if you coat everything beforehand with liquid wrench it should be a very smooth install. the instructions for star are more than enough for anyone who can turn a wrench imo. as far as tech help, thats why we are here. emoji

Thanks for all the help everyone!! I will hopefully be purchasing this kit in a few months. Will i still have this post i would like to ask a few more questions.
1)What exhaust measurement should i get to compliment the turbo??(2.25, 2.5, 3)
2)If i got the exhaust before the turbo would it bolt up to stock converter and would it work properly??
3) And finally, where in the hell do people buy their missing links..???? I cant find them anywhere! emoji

the hardest part was taking off the old rusted exhaust components trust me.

the exhaust depends if you have it made or bought, most cat back systems bolt right on. The Star comes with a 3" downpipe, get a full 3inch system and you will be happy.

If your're intentions are to never go above a stage 2 kit, with stock internals, then IMO, go with the HRC setup. It spools up just a bit faster, and is a little more user friendly(installation, tuning, i suppose). Now, if you realize that most of us who turbo, always want more power, and you want to take your car to the track and be fast, get the Star kit. The T3/T4 turbo is an outstanding turbo, and will be good for over 400+ HP, efficiently. The S16G in the HRC kit, starts to loose its efficiency after around 350 HP. The air starts getting super hot, and a good FMIC is really needed when you start pushing 15 psi on the S16G. For the HRC kit, for a safe, reliable running motor, dont push 8 or 9 psi on the S16G. For the Star kit, dont push 8 psi, as the T3/T4 turbo will flow more air, and provide more power for each pound of boost over the S16G. I would always recomend to upgrade the stock injects to the 30lb no matter what. Lets you run more sane fuel pressures, and beating the stock injects with 120 psi of fuel pressure really isnt good.

Oh, and Sonkiboom- how in the hell are you running 16 psi on the 30lbers with the T3/T4 turbo??? I am maxing out my 30 lbers at around 14 psi with the S16G?? How are your EGT's and A/F numbers?? I'd be very careful with that much boost..

You know, I'm not really sure how I am running 16psi on the 30lbs injectors. I datalogged it and all at 16psi and everything looks fine. My EGT's never get any hotter than 1550. I've turned it back down to about 14psi for now though. I just wanted to see how much I could get out of my 30lbs injectors.

Star Performance Turbo Kit - By Jeff

Pros
The Turbo: Star uses a Turbonetics designed T3/T4 turbocharger with optional trims and a ball bearing option. This turbo is great for 350, 400 or more horsepower. With the ball bearing option (which tacks on another $500 to the price of the turbo mind you), turbo lag is almost none existant.

The Pipes: Star pipes are chrome plated for looks and style.

The Intercooler: Using a Spearco core and custom end tanks, the Star FMIC (you get the FMIC with stage two) will support 400whp.

Fuel Pressure Riser: Star uses the Vortech FMU. Enought said, when it comes from Votech you know it's good.

Wastegate: External wastegate is more relilable and better for controlling boost spikes and flow.

Cons
The Instructions: They really don't have a set of instructions. They are only a couple pages long. The install itself is really for experienced people.

The Manifold: I would have rather seen Star sell this kit with at least an euqal length runner manifold.

The Bov: The kit comes with what I consider a stock 1g bov, however it's more or less a simply HKS generic Bov.

All in all I have to say I like this kit. Then again I'm not new to turbo's and turbo systems and know how to make this work. Star dosen't have the support that HRC offers which I don't like. None the less if you want a turbo system and have an idea of where you want to go with it, and know how to get there as well, the Star kit may be for you. Either way, both kits are awesome, and either way you're going turbo. It's really up to you to decide. Here is the Star kit www.raceprep.net

HAHN Racecraft Turbo Kit - By James

Pros
HAHN has several stages of kits. You can start off with a stage 1 kit and work your way up, or jump in with a stage 3 kit. Its up to you. If you want to know about what comes with each kit, check out www.hahnracecraft.com. I bought the stage 2 kit which comes with an FMIC, 16G turbo, black polished intercooler pipping, 300gt blow off valve, cast iron exhaust manifold, external inline fuel pump, and a Cartech fuel pressure regulator. There are other things that come with the stage 2 kit, but those are the big ones.

The Turbo; The 16G turbo does spool faster than the STAR’s T3/T4. However, the STAR T3/T4 can create a bit more horsepower at top end. Furthermore, the STAR T3/T4 has a larger horsepower potential than the 16G. I personally like the 16G better because of the company backing the turbo. If you like to autocross or drag, the 16G is a very good turbo for both. The STAR turbo might take too long to spool when autocrossing.

The Intercooler; The intercooler HAHN uses is huge. Its deeper and taller than the STAR intercooler. Its worth the extra money for an upgrade in the stage 2 kit. There are some cons for this listed below though..

About the company; The main reason why I purchased a HAHN kit was because of the company backing the turbo kit. HAHN has tested and tested their kits and is constantly updating them for the better. I enjoy being able to call and talk to technical support when I have a simple question to a 45 minute discussion about something dealing with the kit. I enjoy the fact that they know what they are talking about when it comes to my car and the potential it has.

The Directions; Damn, ok here is another deciding point for me. The directions that come with the HAHN kit are about 30 pages long, unlike the STAR’s kit which is no more than 1 page long. Not to mention the fact that I can call technical support during the installation to ask questions.

Cons
The Directions; Granted the directions are very detailed, however they can be somewhat hard to follow at times. It only really happens when you are dealing with the fuel installation instructions.

The Cartech Fuel Pressure Regulator; I’ve noticed that this fuel pressure regulator starts dropping fuel pressure after many runs at the track (about 10 straight runs without a cool off period). You shouldn’t do 10 straight runs without cooling off. So if you don’t drive your car like an idiot, you’ll be fine and never see it happen. Remember that when you race, do a run, let the car sit for about 30 to 45 minutes and run again. You need to allow cool off time. (I know the consequences if you don't and its not pretty) Some people say that the Cartech FMU drops pressure more often then just at the track. I personally haven't seen it except for at the track. Furthermore, the Cartech FMU sucks when you are going with bigger injectors. Its just not setup to handle the larger injectors.. Basically, you will run way too much fuel and be unable to control fuel pressure under boost. Im about to find out if switching to the Vortech FMU fixes this problem. I will report back then.

The Price; Like I said before the HAHN kit does cost more, however I feel that the HAHN kit is worth the money. This is going to sound odd, but I have a sense of security with the turbo kit, which is something I didn’t have with the STAR kit.

Injectors; HAHN says you can run with stock injectors for up to Stage 2, however, I feel that larger injectors are needed. My car was running too lean and I actually cracked one of my injectors because of the enourmous amount of fuel pressure HAHN has you run. I pu in 310cc injectors which is now making me run rich, but rich is ok. If you change the injectors, get a vortech FMU as well and replace the Cartech FMU.

The FMIC; The FMIC is very big and nice, however many people have to cut their bump stop out a little in order for it to fit. You must also cut the inside of the front bumper to allow for the room. Its not that big of a deal but worth mentioning.

I haven’t noticed many cons with the HAHN kit besides those mentioned. I would like to see the HAHN kit come with some more gauges and a better BOV, but all in all, Im very happy.

Inevitably, which kit you choose is completely up to you. Hopefully this will help you in deciding which one to go with. Both kits are very good.

I have the hahn stage II kit and here are somethings I like and dislike.

+++ 16g spools good in my view. Nice sized turbo that gets the job done.

+++ FMIC. This thing is fucking pimp. Its HUGE!

+++ Instructions. Very nice. I started my turbo install not knowing how to change my own oil.

--- Exhuast manifold bolts...worst fucking design ever. It's bad enough that they are allen bolts and they make it worse by having them back out every 3 god damned days. This problem is easily fixed though.

--- HRC Downpipe Design. Ghetto is the only word i have for it.

--- Accell fuel pump. OMG GAY imo. The accell pump is so noisy that it just about kills the enjoyment of cruising. Providing a bigger replacement pump would be a better solution. No wiring extra shit.

--- Hahn Craptech FPR. This thing cant keep the fuel pressure the same as the last time you started your car. 30 lbs, 45 lbs, 28 lbs, 65 lbs...If you're not constantly monitoring your fuel pressure its like playing pinata with your motor. Easy fix, get a vortech.

There are some things that i envied about my buddies star stage 2 kit:

+ His fuel setup.
+ Polished piping
+ Although his FMIC is smaller he didnt have to hack the shit outta his bumper.
