Well I HAD one of those ebay boost controller that I got for 15 bux a while ago. Worked great for awhile. But recently its started to spike and it did some crazy spiking and goofy boosting stuff when I went to the drift event. I think it may have jacked up my engine before when I cracked a piston and after the drift event. I always blamed it on the wastegate that it need to be exercised or something but it was the MBC all along.
I noticed that it doesn't control the boost the night I took it off. I plugged a signal line direction from the turbo to the wastegate (woopie stock boost 4 psi!) and it ran good again no spikes it just spooled hella fast haha felt like a T25
anyway I took it apart and found out the ball inside was stuck/seized onto the hole it was resting on blocking the boost signal. So that was my problem. I think I could still us this boost controller if I got a bigger ball for it because it keeps on getting stuck. But just be careful with these cheap things. Might be time to just get a real one. NEway if your spiking a lot like when its cold or something open it up and see what that ball is doing.

I have a joe P and Hallman mbc and both can't or won't let me boost above 12psi. It's pissing me off because I'm used to 15psi. Not sure what the problem with it is, but I know that when I don't have the boost controller hooked up, I'll boost at the preset 2psi. WTF? These mbc are cheap shits. And when I try to go to full boost in 3rd or 4th gear, the damn thing boosts real slow and won't go above 6psi at 5k.

..well besides fondling your balls, the only other tid bit I know is that a bleeder vent between the main check-ball and the wastegate is needed for higher boost. Some MBCs have a bleed vent and some don't. Its function is explained better on this DIY MBC writeup - http://www.geocities.com/chmwatson/FAQs/mbc.html ...here's a little quote for ya.
<quote> The bleeder hole is not large enough to affect the signal to the Waste Gate but it is necessary to gently vent off excess vacuum or pressure in the line which causes a type of signal lock. If the hole wasn't put in, the controller would have difficulty controlling boost above about 15 pounds. </quote>
