#51780, "WTF I keep blowing my intercooler pipes off !!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Today after instaling my new turbo I turned the boost to 16psi and went wot down a block and booooom. Rpms dropped to like 300 car is about to die wtf. I check under the car and I notice my lower intercooler pipe is off ( The one connected to my j-pipe). I put it back on and drove home very slow after that lol . My question is how common is that to happen. What should I do to re-enforse the clamps so they dont come off ? That would suck if that happened while i was on the highway.

welcome to the world of high boost! no matter how tight i put my clamps on, i still popped my lower IC pipe every now and then. the solution? flange the pipeing(if it isnt already). i didnt do it any "fancy" way. just took some good pliers and bent the metal back all the way around. 15psi everyday, 18psi at the track, and ive yet to blow one off since.

You can bend the metal out on the ends like they said above, or take your pipes to a shop and have them weld a bead around the end. What kit do you have, cuz I seem to remember that the HRC pipes are already flared at the ends.

My personal fix, lose the crappy hose clamps and go with some t-bolt clamps. They hold MUCH better!

Get some hairspray (really) and spray it on the pipe. Before it dries, slide the connector on the pipe and tighten it down. Once it dries it will likely never pop off again. Tested on my Eclipse to 28 psi on a non-beaded pipe.

Above 15 psi, you'll keep blowing off the i/c pipes. You could take it to a welding shop and have them put some beads at the end of the pipes. You will never blow off pipes again, except maybe, blown coupler emoji You shouldn't have to worry about that if you use any quality coupler.

Here's a link to RRE's epoxy bead method: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclipsetech/icpipebead.htm

also ruff up the surface the coupler is grabbing onto so its got good grip that helps a bit, or at least make sure there no oil or whatever on it. you can try double clamping it also

having my custom junkyard piping they pop sometimes and its very annoying emoji

i saw a picture where someone welded a piece of metal from one pipe to the other so that the pipes were connected with a connector and had a metal piece holding them together. didnt blow a pipe after that
