Which wastegate do most of you turbo guys use? Im getting a turbo here in a few weeks and im thinking about getting a Tial wastegate. from what i have read though the 40mm seems to be the best for my goals. my question though is which spring should i get? and what does the spring rate mean? is that the biggest or lwoest amount of boost before the gate opens? thats the only part i dont quite understand

The Tial 35-38mm is the common UPGRADE for the Deltagate (made by Turbonetics). Dependant on whether you're going with a custom manifold or the Star (for instance), going with the 40mm with increase the install difficulty. The 40mm is a four bolt flange, where as the Deltagate or the Tial 38mm will be a two bolt flange (most common). Although now, ATP Turbo offers a hybrid 38/40 Tial wastegate. It has the increased responsiveness of the 40mm diaphragm with the 38mm outlet and two bolt flange.
The spring rate is the pressure at which the wastegate will open. The amount of boost is dependant on the source.
For instance, if you have a 7# spring with the vacuum line (connected to the wastegate) sourced from the turbo, the wastegate will open when the turbo hits 7psi. Take that same 7# spring and source it from the manifold, the turbo will be at ~10-11psi minus 3-4psi for intercooler drop. Hence, 7psi at the manifold, the wastegate will open.
Regardless of which spring you go with, you can always adjust the amount of boost with a controller. I believe the higher rated spring will be more accurate and responsive. Mainly because the stiffer spring will be less likely to leak at higher boost. Also, the boost is being controlled more by the spring than the controller.
