My headgasket is definately going quickly, so Im going in for a rebuild. I was recommended to use JE pistons and crower rods. What do people think about those? I was told the eagles were slightly worse, is that true?
I wanted to originally do 10.5:1 compression, but I was told that I really shouldnt due to the tuning issues when boosting. However, I dont really wanna go into the 8.x:1. Does anyone know if pistons are made somewhere around the 9.6:1 range? Thanks.

crower are great rods if you plan to push that much power out, eagles will do fine up to 350-400hp. so if you go with eagle you can save a few $100+. and 881 is good to run higher boost without detox etc etc. if you want the 961 compression its custom by je i think. also wiseco or whatever is a great piston too. good luck Michael 99gs (broken) Motor being built now HRC Stage 2 8-Injector Setup Fully Built by July 25,2003 hehe 2GNT Member #32

Eagle rods can take much more than 400HP. I've heard 700+HP on those rods before.. I have heard too, that the Crower's can take a bit more abuse power wise though..

10.5:1 is cool i would say to a point, same goes for 881 you know. i might built my spare motor later with 10.5:1 in a year or so just for kicks. we shall c. but 10.5:1 compression is harder to tune compared to 881compression. do about 95% or more on this board has 881 compression. cool Michael 99gs (broken) Motor being built now HRC Stage 2 8-Injector Setup Fully Built by July 25,2003 hehe 2GNT Member #32

The block I might be buying off 420Avenger has pauter (sp?) rods. Ever hear of them?
Crower rods are great rods, maybe the best, but your going to pay for them for sure. Expensive - like 700 bucks. The eagles are much cheaper and in all reality, probably well suited for the hp most of will be able to run realiably.

I just got my rebuild kit from Motofool and it came with the Wiseco 10.5:1 and Eagle ESP rods. They kick ass. I haven't got them actually IN the cylinders yet, but they are a high quality piece for sure. The rods are almost twice as thick as OEM and overall quality just from looking at them is amazing.
What are the chances you're gonna be pushing over 400h before you can afford to rebuild again anyway? Make that money s-t-r-e-t-c-h!

fyi... the two people i know who had 10.5:1 compression either blew up or decided it was to hard to tune the car with the 10.5:1 compression so they drop back down to 8.8:1.. and both know alot about tuning/building and so on.. good luck Michael 99gs (broken) Motor being built now HRC Stage 2 8-Injector Setup Fully Built by July 25,2003 hehe 2GNT Member #32

IMO i would break out the extra cash for some CP pistons. I hear they are a lot quieter than the JE's. I have never run them tho, just going by the word on the street!

well, going by your subject, you want the BEST internals, not necessarily the cheapest. So, I woul;d recommend the following:
Pauter rods, as the X beam design is not only stronger, it reduces windage... And Arias pistons, as you can choose whatever the hell compression ratio that you want. They are also a slightly longer skirt then the JE's, which will reduce piston and cylinder wall erosion (and the damned diesel sound on cold startup).
