#50243, "Got a t25, dsm sidemount, and a 420a! what else???"
hey all, im a honda guy, but im posting this for a friend. I know about turbos and such and i know the ways to go about them, but for HOnda's. check sig. but i am trying to find the best ways to build a budget turbo kit for my buddy. He has a 96 gs with a shit load of miles. I keep telling him to sell it and buy a 1gen gsx, but he wont listen
So far what we got: T25 in good condtion, with internal wastegate DSM sidemount his 420a I got a welder, and we are gonna fab up a log style mani and downpipe, he already has 2.5 in exhaust and no cat
gonna get a 1gen dsm bov homemade boost controller
I am mainly curious about what fuel options i got to go with, mind you this is for a bugdet, so i was thinking a S-afc, 450 injectors (which i got in my honda BTW), and a walbro fuel pump outta be good. i figure that would cost about $400. another route would be fpr, inline, and stock injectors. but i think the afc would give the best options for a safe tune. what boost can i expect to run safely on my options. Thanks for the help, its very much appreciated
A honda 95 dx coupe - t3/t4 and b18b. 3 in downpipe and exhaust should hit 12's when motor finally move from my kitchen to the engine bay

Welcome to the site.
I guess the first thing I'll mention is that leaning with an SAFC(or any MAP sensor modifyer) on our cars advances the timing. Several people have blown motors from boosting on such an advanced timing curve. If you're gonna use an SAFC under boost, make sure that you don't lean on it too much. Search for "AFC timing" in this forum and you'll see what I mean.
To get the right amount of fuel, most folks around here use a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. The Vortech SFMU seems to be the most popular. It looks like a good unit. I don't know how much experience you have with RFPRs, so basically they increase the fuel pressure by a certain rate per pound of boost...like 12:1 or 8:1 or 6:1...x:1 - where x is the rise in fuel pressure and 1 is a pound of boost. Search for "SFMU" or "FMU" in this forum and you'll find a good bit of information on how to use them. I'll also just mention here that you have to be carefull with how high the pressure gets. I think the most anyone would want to push it is to 100psi - some would say 120psi.
That should get you started. You've definately come to the right spot for questions. There's a ton of good info about boosting the 420a on this site. Good luck.

sounds like you know what your doing....but i'd still convince him to get the 1g AWD....he'll end up thanking you for it later...but if he insists it can be done....the #1 thing to do is a compression check..you said he had a shitload of miles...so if he's out of spec..(185-210psi) then turbo is out of the question without a rebuild...if he's good then you are on the right track. there are people on this board who sell manifolds that aren't very expensive and are very nice- motofool(gottude.com) or alian95i4....with a turbo as small as the t25, injectors aren't really needed, neither is the AFC if he's looking to keep it cheap...basically all he'd need for fuel is a fuel pump, either walbro or an inline, and a fuel pressure riser, such as the vortech SFMU. he'll need an oil line kit, motolfool sells them at his site(gottude.com again) and all the piping....
as far as max boost goes, shouldn't take it iver 8psi...that seems to be the magical number for the 420a, some have gone over that and been fine, most have cracked piston ring lands...good luc

For fuel, go with ford svo 32lb/hr injectors, vortec s-fmu, supra or other in-tank fuel pump, and a missing link. That should cover your needs for this turbo and intercooler fairly cheap. An AFC will allow more tunability if so desired later on and perhaps a bit more power from that but not absolutely necessary on a simple setup. The stock ecu can manage 32lb/hr injectors without it. I imagine you should be able to run 12-14psi on a T-25 with the stock motor assuming it is in good condition.

Sweet! you guys rock. Thanks for all the help. i know i gotta do a comp check, so hopefully it turns out good. but it looks like fpr and a pump outta be cool. it looks like we will prolly shoot for 8lbs on it. dont wanna go too high and put him out his only ca and the mani and piping we are gonna give it our best shot, there is a shop around here that does mandrel bends dirt cheap. around $150 for all my 2.25 ic piping and 3in exhaust!!!!! thanks again for all your help. its hard to find a knowledgable forum where questions go beyond, "what body kit looks cool!" thanks Burke

You, sir, have certainly come to the right place.

I have a T25 setup (one of the only Two that I know of, the other is Tim97RS on this board). It works great for me. If you want some pics of the install and some of the stuff you need done let me know I have a TON on my imagestation site. Just hit me with an email @ kevjoh60@hotmail.com
I also do not recomend doing a lot of tuning with the AFC I blew engine #2 by bad tuning with it. Probly don't go over 10 percent on any adjustment. 450's will probly be way too big for that setup go with something a bit smaller. If your planning on using dsm injectors from a turbo dsm you should get the 1st gen automatic tranny ones they are a bit smaller. And either the super fmu from vortech or the cartech fmu will do just fine for you. Although they are both on the spendy price range. This does not help you to keep your cost's low thought. afc = 280-325 fmu = 200-350 fuel pump = 100 injectors = 100 (new ford ones) or 30-60 for dsm injectors (but you will need to modify them to get them to work, as you proly know since your running them in your honda)+15 This moves you way over the 400 price your trying to keep this at.

I would guess more like 160-170fwhp at that level. Run more like 12-14psi to get in the 210-220fwhp range. That in itself is just pure speculation, but do not expect a lot of power out of it.
