I have the 2.2L w/turbo and a S-AFC. I know that the S-AFC is not recommended when turboed, because it will cause te ECU to advance timing when under boost if leaned out too much which I understand is BAD.
What I would like to know is if it is okay to retard the ignition timing with my MSD DIS-2 say 10 degrees or so, so that the timing is not advanced so much under boost. I still do not have the car tuned or have a datalogger to tell how much the ignition advances at xxxx amount of boost etc. Are there any ill effects such as loss of performance or blowing the engine if the timing is retarded too much?
Hopefully some of you knowledgable turbo guys can help me out. Thanks

Are you getting detonation? You shouldn't have to pull timing until you're actually getting detonation....and then at that point - pull the timing slowly until the knock goes away. Turn up boost and repeat.
You should get a datalogger anyway - to keep an eye on your fuel trims and make sure that your ignition is doing what you tell it to. I got mine(which I like very much) for $122 here: http://www.obd-2.com/

Yeah thanks for the link. I was planning on getting a datalogger very soon anyways. So retarding the timing is not necessary until I get detonation? May sound like a really dumb question because I have never had knock or detonation to my knowledge.....but will it be very obvious if I do get it?? Just dont wanna hurt my engine and my wallet again.

Best thing to do is get the datalogger and then see where your timing really is at. If you are between 18-22 at full throttle then leave it alone. If it is going way above that sort it out. If you are having to make large adjustments with the AFC then you need to reset your base fuel pressure or your rising rate so you do not have to. There is no reason you should ever have to make large adjustments with an AFC.
Oh, and to answer you intial question, low timing can cause your car to be very sluggish.
