#48952, "90 degree silicone coupler + 20 psi=exploded coupler"

I know this has been stated before, but this is another confirmation that the HRC 90 degree silicone coupler is prone to blow/explode around 20psi boost. This occurred while I was racing a newer Camaro SS on the freeway. I was in 4th and shifting into 5th when I heard a loud pop. Pulled over and found the coupler was only attached by a small section.

Here's some pics of the blown coupler: http://laoracer.homestead.com/picshosting.html

Ouch... I think eventually I will replace mine either with a Samco 90 degree, or a metal elbow, with 2 silicone couplers.

Oh hell yeah man. I wasn't even running 20 psi and I 've blown two of those AND a radiator hose.

BTW, it's not a silicone coupler, it's a nitrile rubber elbow. The reason I make that point of clarification is that the nitrile rubber elbows are only good for up to 275 degress. (http://www.innovativeturbo.com) Given that, and having already blown a few of those, I've since upgraded to a more expensive silcone elbow. Although true silicone couplers are exponentially more expensive, I took into account the location of this coupler at the compressor outlet along with their ability withstand heat closer to 550 degress, I ate the cost. About $50 some dollars! :o

Very good point, Jason. I think I'm going to go ahead and weld in a hard 90 elbow there, because of the extreme heat. Plus, I don't have any heatshield to cover the exhaust manifold.

There was a list of great retailers who sell these things done recently. I used innovative turbo to get mine. (link above)

Do a search for the others.

If you could only see that thing under boost; it blows up like a balloon. Literally twice it's size. I'd replace the one that goes under the fuse/relay box too. It will be next to go.

wow cool haha yeah I know how that feels you boosting then you just hear something blow up and air hella gushing out then your car is slow as crap. if you plan on keeping the turbo like that you could weld an elbow on I've seen it done and probably sand it down real nice so it looked nice.

www.mcmaster.com sells elbows for pretty cheap, if anything you could get two really small coupler and plop it in there.
