#4894, "SAFE EGT TEMPS ???"

SO I JUST ORDERD MY EGT FROM WESTACH TODAY.

FIRST QUESTION... DO I HAVE TO TAKE OFF MY MANIFOLD TO DRILL THE HOLE ? OR CAN i JUST DRILL IT THEN DISCONNECT THE LOWER INTERCOOLER PIPIN AND LET IT BLOW OUT THROUGHT THE EXHAUST OR IC PIPE ?

SECOND...
WHAT IS THE RANGE OF TEMP THAT I SHOULD BE IN ? AND THIS MAY SEEM LIKE A STUPID QUESTION BUT...DOES THE EGT STAY HOOKED UP ALL THE TIME ? DO I MOUNT THE GUAGE IN THE CAR AND ALWAYS LEAVE THE PROBE IN THERE ?

OH AND ANOTHER THING....ON THE A/F GUAGE ...MY FRIEND SAID THAT WHEN IM BOOSTING AT LIKE 7 PSI (STOCK) AT W.O.T THAT THE GUAGE SHOULD READ ALL THE WAY RICH...IS THIS TRUE ? AND WHY SOMETIME WHEN IM BOOSTING THE A/F READING IS LEAN AND IT TAKE A FEW MOMENTS FOR IT TO GO TO RICH ?

I think 1600F is a perfectly fine max temp. I start troubleshooting if my EGTs break 1650F. Remove the manifold to drill the holes. Stuff a rag in the runners to keep metal chips out of the turbine. That is the safest way to do it. The probe stays in place. You'll want to glance at the gage now and then to insure that everything is running right. I would expect the A/F gage to read full rich under WOT boost. I wouldn't worry if it takes a second to read right. Sometimes lots of fuel can screw with the O2 sensor momentarily.

I'm gettin good at this. But everyone seems to ask those same questions when they get a turbo. I think I've asked them myself (a while ago)

Hey Corbin, is 1600 ok for intercooled or non-intercooled systems? Also, at how much boost is that ok? I am hitting 4psi (think there is a vacuum leak to my boost gauge) on my stage 1.

By the way, thanks a lot for the gauge...very good craftsmanship. Works perfectly. At WOT I am seeing anywhere from .94-.96. And I love the backlight emoji

I really can't say much about what boost or IC/no IC 1600F is good for. Since I've got a pretty good IC, I feel perfectly safe at 1600-1650F. If I didn't have an IC I would aim to keep it closer to 1600F. I would just feel safer doing that. I believe that 1600-1650F is the same zone that the 4G63 guys stay in. Glad you like the A/F gage, I've been using mine alot to tune the car recently. Way more useful than the silly LED gage I used to have.
