#48829, "ok, help me figure out this ML - fuel cut thing"

well, this is my second ML. i just got it and installed it 2 days ago. with the last one i had, i was getting fuel cut while easing into boost, or while the car was under heavy load at 0 psi. i figured it was the ML fault, and i still believe it was. i soaked it in silicone and wd40 and even some penetrating oil. it was fine for a couple days and then started up again.

now, i've gotten a replacement, and it has been fine for 2 days. no fuel cut even w/ the car under load, until now. i was driving on the highway in 5th and gave it some gas to accelerate a little, and i guess(wasn't looking at the boost gauge) when it hit 0psi, the car just seemed to hiccup. just a very small stutter, not extreme fuel cut. but immediately after the cel came on, and it was the map circuit too high blah blah. the freakin' ML let boost through. now i can't imagine getting 2 bad units, and although this one is a lot better, is this supposed to happen. i mean, do any of you guys w/ the ML EVER notice the ML letting boost through(cel, fuel cut, whatever)? i'm sure you guys have accelerated in 5th into boost. i'm really stumped, besides being very annoyed emoji. what could be wrong? has anyone experienced it? i really don't want to have to throw the hahn fcd on there.

the ML is installed w/ the small pin hole facing the pass. side, and the map sensor is installed w/ the side with the clip on the plug facing the mani. i doubt this is the problem, but just incase. and yes, the o-ring is on there as well. sorry for the long post emoji

Nope.. i cant say that i have... i even dropped mine, it all came apart inside, and after figuring out how it works, putting it back together, it seems to work perfect still... so are you sure the studder is fuel cut? it does make sense, just thought i would throw that out there, just in case you are looking at the wrong thing...

anyone ever thought of a drive-thru parts store? that would be cool!

well with the new ML it only happened once, but i haven't tried to make it happen since. i wasn't sure if it was fuel cut and was hoping that it was from maybe going really rich at that moment, b/c i didn't want to have to deal w/ more ML problems. like i said, this happened a lot w/ the last ML i had. but, it's definitely fuel cut, although it's not like harsh jerking, it was just a small "hiccup". i would have disregarded it if it wasn't for the cel that followed immediately after. the code was "map circuit to high..." which is from the map seeing boost. therefore, the ML let boost through, however small it may have been. have you ever tried to boost out of 5th at like 50mph? that's when it happened.

Ok... the only reason i asked, is becasue i thought i saw a few people on here that werent running a ML, or black box... i had a similar issue, but the hicuping was misfire in my case, and i replaced the plugs, and its been fine since... but you mention the cel tripping map, so its either a bad map or ML... i cant see what else it could be...

anyone ever thought of a drive-thru parts store? that would be cool!

i've had the EXACT same problem with my missing link since day 1 of having it. i hate returning shit because i hate dealing with online companies due to the fact that they're often drunken and kick and scream when you try to return stuff. i also figured with my luck i'd get another missing link that lets boost through only at 0 psi just like what happened to you.

for a while, i had the HRC FCD and the missing link on, until my FCD started clamping the voltage to 4.0 volts. i took the FCD off and it was fine for like 2 months, then today after i reset the ECU i got fuel cut again. you tell me.

I've bought mine a LONG time ago. It's been at least 6 mos, and haven't had an issue since day one. You guys might have had a bad batch. Just send it back for another. I'm sure it's not a big deal.

man... all i want is one of the good ones! well, i've been talking to the guy over at synapse and so far he's been very good about helping me. he sent me this one, and i'm writing him an email now to tell him what's going on w/ the new one. i'm going to ask him if he can give me one of the first ones he made. dunno if he has any. man, this problem is really pissing me off. i cringe every time i accelerate into boost. is it possible that it can be anything else at all?! i doubt it, but just incase i get trouble about getting another one, i want to know for sure. he said that he thought it might be detonation causing the hesitation and map cel, but it's not, i'm sure of that.

ner, i mentioned that you were having the exact same problem, so hopefully you'll benefit off of this also.

BTW - since i've been talking with him, and he seemed like a nice guy, i decided to tell him about the preoblem w/ the mounting holes. he said he was going to fix them on the new ones.

don't think anyone else makes anything like it.

well Peter, the guy at synapse, just responded to my last email. here's the e-mail:

"I'll have to think about it some more. The problem is that the valve is a normally closed valve that is sprung to stay shut at atmospheric levels. We could run a stiffer spring, however, you may encounter other problems associated with that, such as early rich conditions at boost onset, etc. I'll think of a configuration and let you know when it is ready and I'll ship it over. Don't take the valve apart, you'll only damage it, there is really nothing more you can do at this point. It is not a defective valve in my opinion, something more of an anomally with your specific applications. If a change in spring rates doesn't change it, then it must be an endemic issue I've never seen. I'll take a look at the unit you sent over first to eliminate all possibilities.

Peter"

maybe where your elevation has to do with how the ML works. I'm at sea level... where are all you guys? also, i see how a stiffer spring could cause a extremely slight rich consition at onset, but would it even be noticeable at all? hopefully this helps. also, he said it's an abnormality with my/our application, i don't see anything different in our app from anyone elses.

A year...man, I have no idea when I put mine. I swear I was one of the first, if not the very first to get one. I don't know though. It just doesn't seem like it was that long ago!

haha well it seems like a year ago, but I'm trying to remember now when exactly i got it. I know for sure it was last year, in the spring/summertime, prob around June or July, as i know i had it on ther when we went to the DSM Shootout. So i guess its been almost a year emoji Actually, Matt_95tgs has my original ML, as I gave it to him to use on his car, when he was having probs with the 8 inj setup(when my motor was all apart). Then he bought me a new one to replace that with, about a month or so ago, and I have had no probs with this one either emoji I usually will see 0 or 1 psi all the time, as its usually where i drive when just granny driving. So i dont know man, maybe you have a faulty map sensor, thats freaking out when it sees 0 vac. I would test your map voltage with the key in the run position, car off, and see what you get right at the map sensor's plug. It should be 4.5 volts, +/- .1 volts...

have you guys noticed what the map values are when you boost according to your dataloggers? with me i see 100kpa whenever i'm in boost. however, when i get the fuel cut the value is usually 102 and sometimes when it's at 101 it'll cut also. i was thinking that maybe the map sensor is supposed to be able to see slightly over 0psi, and mine just isn't allowing that. i never had any probs w/ the map when i was n/a. i'm lost man emoji

>have you guys noticed what the map values are when you boost
>according to your dataloggers?

Since atmospheric for me is about 103 kPa, that's about when I start to boost, although I should probably verify that through watching both my boost gauge and my laptop sometime.

with me i see 100kpa whenever
>i'm in boost. however, when i get the fuel cut the value is

When you were n/a, your MAP never saw any boost! emoji

How are you measuring your air density in kPa? Are you running the EIC setup as well? If so, then perhaps you need to try and have your MAP rate sensitivity turned up, lower your fuel onset closer to 100, and put an inline boost restrictor. Do a search, this has been discussed in a couple of other threads.

(I did a search on the ML, and I had initially posted on it back in MArch of 02'. Man, that was a while ago. I'm gettin old! emoji )

hehe, thanks jason. i'm not running the 8-inj setup, although maybe in the future i will. anyway, i'm getting my map values from my pocketlogger. i'm not sure what my atmospheric pressure is here, but i'm right near NYC, so i'm pretty close to sea level. most of the time that i'm in boost i see 100kpa on the map, and every so often i see 101kpa, however whenever i hit fuel cut the map is at 102kpa and rarely it happens at 101. i guess i'm wondering if the map is supposed to be able to see that little boost overlap before the ML closes? maybe my map is just too sensitive? is there any way to recalibrate anything? uh yeah, hehe i know the map never saw boost when n/a emoji , but it did see 0psi when WOT correct? it never had any problems then, so these problem must be caused by the map seeing over 0psi. i think, hehe, i dunno. i just hate being afraid(oooh, hehe) to accel into boost in high gears b/c i think i'm gonna hit fuel cut, and then comes the cel. emoji

EDIT: just thought i'd add that i just check all my n/a logs(only 3), but i never saw more than 100kpa on the map at WOT, which should equate to 0 psi.
