#48734, "tuning my 440's"

well I got the whole fuel system installed. something weird is going on though...
ok i set my static fuel press with sfmu, then the idle fuel press came down to about 15kpa (about 20-21psi) so far so good, car is chocking on gas, idles rough and black smoke comes out.. so I leave it like this for a bit to let the computer do the adjustment and then tune more with safc.... well i waited for a bit and it got a bit better so I thought that was it, time to use safc.. so I set the low settings for 1k rpm to -15 and the car got much better. ok drove it and it was good. so i called it a night.
Well this morning pressure was the same but it idled really rough but it was not rich, it was very lean!!! a/f was reading .09!!! so I richened with safc and put the settings to 0 to start again.. well the a/f voltage came up and cicled around with a max # of .84.. still lean! but car idled smooth.
so I set it to +2 and drove to work.. car still on the lean side, but runs good. fuel press at idle varies between 11and 15 kpa (about 19-21psi) so press is good. but there seems to be no need for the safc at idle!! anyone encountered this??
can the computer lean the 440's out that much???
Any ideas as to what is going on guys?
Thanks.

do you have a datalogger? there is no way you can tune your car 'well' without knowing the fuel trims/dyno etc. i know people with 440cc injectors run idle fp from 15-27psi give or take. different combo disk, ring, and spring etc.
be careful how much you lean with the afc you could advance timing to a 'high' number. just thought i would add my 2cents in..
good luck

I know that.. just trying to set my low rpm percentage points (no need for dyno for that) but it seems like the computer leaned out the mixture all by itself at 19-21psi idle press. just wondering if this is supposed to happen, cus I had to richen with my safc to idle right this morning.
also extra info.. i have the smallest disk in and the regular spring.

Any ideas as to what is going on guys?

ok for idle no need for a dyno. but you need to know what your fuel trims are at idle so you can idle and get it close to ~0 if so.
good luck man

Entirely possible. Sometimes the ECU will suprise you with its ability to compensate for different fueling situations.

so fi the ecu is able to compensate would it actually lean the mixture? cus with the lo setting of the afc at +2 for all rpms my a/f still does not get above.9 when under boost.
this is just weird to me.. I will keep playing with it and see.. but strange that I have to add fuel to 440 injectors!!
hehe

"004 proved that you CAN use jsut a fuel pressure regulator and injectors and make a 420A car run. Using the 2.72" disk and 440 cc injectors with the base fuel pressure close to max, the car was able to run at 10.5:1 air fuel ratio at 12 psi and close to 13.0 air fuel ratio at 16 psi spike. this problem was fixed by replacing the 2.42" disk with a 2.72" adjustment disk. this makes the air fuel ratio a consistant 11.3:1 on the dyno at all boost levels.
-004 uses the s-afc to "fine tune" the air/fuel curve with minor adjustments. "

this is from armonds site.... hope this helps a little.. if not, let me know and ill try to get more infor for ya.

sweet! thanks man. i will switch the disk from the 2.22" to the 2.72" and re adjust the fuel pressure for static at around 36psi and then see where that brings my press. under full vacumm. put all the afc rpm settings to 0 and see if the computer will compensate and lean the car out.

I think I will need to reset the computer also, cus for some reason my car runs lean!! when i turn it on everymorning a/f reads .05 volts and then it sits there for a while until it warms up and then it goes up to about.84 max. This is with the afc rpm settings at +2 through the low rpm range. I find this very strange. Think I need to start over.
Thanks for the info guys. emoji anymore suggestions are welcome!

004 car has a super 16g so use Armonds settings as a 'base' i believe you have a star kit so its going to be a 'little' different since one turbo flows a little more at certain places then the other.
for a 'base' with 004 car (440cc) when i talked with armond he said " idle fp is about 10-15psi, the disk with the super fmu is the 2.72", short silver spring, no bleeding, wot afc at 0 more or less."
its true the ecu can do wonders, but only if you have the correct idle fp, and rise rate etc etc...
good luck man.

so after I change the disk should i set the static pressure to about 36 again of just hook up the vacuum line and tune the pressure to 12psi where it should be?
