i was 5-6 psi non-intercooled (like my sig) from mid august 2002 to november 2002, at which point i got a 1G SMIC and custom piping. i cracked piston ring landings a day later at 9 psi, resulting in a downtime of 3 months and a good excuse to get forged internals. yay.

For about 4 and a half months now. No problems at all (knock on wood). 1G SMIC is sitting in my room. I've just got to find some time to figure out where I want it and how I want the piping, then I need to call a shop to make it. Oh, and I'll only be boosting 5-6 psi after I'm intercooled too.

Ah, once you're intercooled 8 psi is perfectly safe IMO. It really comes down to tuning the fuel system. My Stage 1 is on the way, but within days I will have my 1G SMIC piped and the boost at 8 psi.

people seem to be blowing their engines at 9psi, I guess 7 or 8 is a better range to stay at on stock internals?

supposely, the stock 420a can handle 300ish BHP. i bet that's about 11-12 psi intercooled with the 9.6:1 stock pistons. i'd only do that if you have a spare engine ready to put in, you have a S-FMU and 30lb+ injectors, or if you're bill hahn himself and know exactly how to perfectly tune a turbocharged 420a.

I've been non-intercooled for about 5k miles. I have a starion sitting in my garage waiting to be mounted. I dont think I'm going to use it though. I'm probably going to get a spearco off ebay.

I have been looking at the "Boostcoolers" Spearco's on ebay. Are you thinking about the same ones? Let me know how it works out for you.

I've been like that for 2-3 weeks and about 1,xxx miles with no problems, well except for the oil leaking from the oil pan.

Well, My turbo is being peiced together as we speak. I just got my Rods and oil pump a couple days ago. I'll be boosting 6psi from a T3 till my motor is broken in. After that It depends on what fuel and Intercooler set-up I have to determine exact boost pressure.

Oh, and I live 20min from Bill Hahns door step emoji

Happy tuning emoji

Ha ha yeah right. I don't normally push the car hard but when I do it boosts beautifully. Yes, the engine bay does get pretty toasty but nothing's melting or anything and I keep an eye on my EGTs. I'm mainly just getting the intercooler for reliability instead of power. I'd like to keep the underhood temps down as well as keeping down my IAT.

Hell... you can be intercooled for very little above the kit price. Just pic up a used intercooler... perhaps a 1G SMIC (I have that one, will be used in my kit when it arrives), and get it piped at a muffler shop. Pay $50 to $80 for a SMIC, and a hundred or so for making the pipes... I/C'd for less than 200 extra. No matter what boost pressures you run, cooler air is much better than warmer air. Why not?
