I pickup up a T3 turbo off of a 85 saab 900 turbo today. I wanted to wait until I could get some pictures before I started asking questions, but I can't wait to get this project under way. The turbo is in good shape, no shaft play, and it spins fairly good. I believe that it has 0.48 turbine and 0.42 compressor. It is the AiResearch turbo.

So anyways... I need to clean it. Is it safe to use engine degreaser or carb cleaner to clean the outside and inside? Also, can I use kerosene to clean out the center section and possible get the turbo to spin a little better? This turbo appears to be oil cooled but I know that some T3 were water cooled and there is also only one inlet / outlet on the turbo. So it can only be cooled by one method. Can I follow Corbin's rebuild write up to take this sucker apart if I need to? A rebuild kit only costs $110 for this turbo so it may be a good idea. I also have the downpipe and hot pipe from the saab, so I guess I could use the O2 housing and just start my downpipe after that. It would avoid that one sharp 90 degree turn right after the turbine.

Now I need a manifold..... So many to choose from.

Here are some pictures.... you see why I have to clean it.

I never thought the compressor output was that small.

I am planning on using that piece attached to the turbine for the beginning of my downpipe. Once I get that cleaned off I have to see if it can be rotated.

The only manifold that you might be able to use that o2 housing with is the tti manifold, but no one from around here has used that manifold. Your probable best off to use one of alain or motofools manifolds and have a custom dp made.
TB cleaner would get most of that carbon off the compressor housing.
