would it be ok if i heat wrapped it? do you think it would help at all? what is the pipe made of? i'm just afraid of it cracking. i can't remove it b/c: a) don't want a cel and b)NYC emissions, so i was wondering if there's a way to keep it's heat contained a bit, so it doesn't mest all my stuff

Leave it there and put a little piece of sheet metal in front on the end of the pipe thats on the exhaust side. This will block off the gases from going up the tube so it will stay cooler. When it's emissions time, remove the block off plate and reset the ECU to pass emissions. I made my block off plate out of a sheet metal electrical plate for a standard size wall socket. I was able to make a plate for the intake and exhaust sides of the pipe with one plate and remove the pipe completely here in FL.

i would just do that, but i don't really want to have a constant cel if avoidable at all. i just want to do something to keep the heat from the pipe from melting everything around it, and i figured heat wrap would be the easiest, given that it won't crack it.

wouldnt wrapping the EGR tube cause the air it carries to be hotter? considering this is going into the intake manifold i would think that to be a "nono". what exactly is melting? somthings got to be wrong if that is happening.

good point... anyone else have any input on it? nothing is melting, however many people have trouble w/ the egr pipe melting the pack of wires that run right above b/c of the extreme heat from the pipe which is even greater when turbo'd.

eh, whatever... just get used to the CEL. LOL "my CEL is on all the time. it just means you have a lot of horsepower."
don't worry about it cracking. when i did my rebuild, i took all of the tubular stuff in my engine out and painted everything black. makes stuff look real nice. it didn't seem like it was ever going to crack. you shouldn't have a problem with wrapping it with stuff.
i don't think it would get that much hotter, i doubt the air gets cooled off that much just by the "heat sink" factor of the pipe itself. you could always use a datalogger and find out the before and after IAT readings. mine are 100-120 driving around town with a 1g SMIC and less 10 psi of boost. i have EGR enabled.
