Alright so my turbo project is falling into place. I know it might seem stupid to make your "own" turbo, but it turns out cheaper for me because I can get the piping and the turbo for free. So far, ive found the exhaust manifold, will find a downpipe, already have a turbo, and will make the piping. So, im probably going to run either a 14b or a 16g. Future plans after the rebuilt probably amount to much more boost, but for now Id just like to get started with a little emoji A few questions I have:

1. What size piping should I use? What should it be made of? Should it be welded together? Im only planning to run maybe 5-6 psi until I rebuilt my engine.
2. Would a stock 2G SMIC be enough for this? Do I even need an intercooler for that little boost?
3. What should I use for boost control?
4. Would my injectors and fuel pump be enough (I have SAFC) to handle the boost I plan to run?
5. Is a 2.5" exhaust good enough for this setup?
6. A 1G BOV should be more than enough, right?
7. What about an external wastegate? The guys who make the manifolds can provide that for a little bit more, and it seems to be wise to do that now then later.

Im probably missing a bunch of stuff that Ill need to know, so someone please fill me in. What else would I need to successfully create and run this setup? Thanks! emoji

>2. Would a stock 2G SMIC be enough for this? Do I even need an
>intercooler for that little boost?

the stock 4g smic is really restrictive, personally i wouldn't pay money to buy one and have pipes made for it. either get a cheap starion ic, or an hrc smic.

>3. What should I use for boost control?

you don't really need one, but the joe p. mbc is a good cheap one

>4. Would my injectors and fuel pump be enough (I have SAFC) to
>handle the boost I plan to run?

you'll definately need to upgrade the fuel system, get an inline pump and some type of adjustable fpr... if you have the money, get an sfmu. also, i'd recomment upgrading the injectors as do many others, although they can handle the 110psi of fuel pressure, that's really an insane amount if you think about it. if you can get 30lb injectors, do it.

>5. Is a 2.5" exhaust good enough for this setup?

2.5 is fine

>6. A 1G BOV should be more than enough, right?

yes

>7. What about an external wastegate? The guys who make the

depends on what you want, but it sounds like a good idea

Heh, I asked these same questions about a month ago. I'll help out a little, but I'm no turbo expert.

>1. What size piping should I use? What should it be made of?
>Should it be welded together? Im only planning to run maybe
>5-6 psi until I rebuilt my engine.

I assume you're talking about intercooler piping. I don't know diameter, it's 2.5 inches I think. Mandrel bent, don't weld it in place, just use the silicon couplers.

>2. Would a stock 2G SMIC be enough for this? Do I even need an
>intercooler for that little boost?

I was told to get a 1g SMIC. They are larger and more efficient. You don't need one for 5 psi, but do it anyway for safety.

>3. What should I use for boost control?

Wastegate, don't use anything where you can turn up the boost until you re-do your internals. You'll get boost happy and blow something.

>4. Would my injectors and fuel pump be enough (I have SAFC) to
>handle the boost I plan to run?

Fuel pump, no, injectors, yes. Just go ahead and get the Walbro in take and the in-line.

>5. Is a 2.5" exhaust good enough for this setup?

Yeah, should be, gut your cat too.

>6. A 1G BOV should be more than enough, right?

Yeah, should be. I'd get a Greddy Type S

>7. What about an external wastegate? The guys who make the
>manifolds can provide that for a little bit more, and it seems
>to be wise to do that now then later.

Yes, I would do this. More reliable and better control. You have to modify your internal gate to accept 5psi...just get an external.

Okay, what you're missing.

Fuel Management Unit....You can use a Vortech FMU, guys running high boost use a SFMU, but for a small set-up like this you can use the FMU and it's a lot cheaper.
http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=VEOS&Product_Code=6Z110-111&Category_Code=FC

Fuel Cut Defencer: Use the Missing Link. Relatively inexpensive and will save you some headaches.
http://www.group5motorsport.com/cgi-bin/GRPstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=SE-MissingLink

Oil lines and coolant lines. Motofool makes a nice oil line kit, if he's the person making your manifold just get the oil kit from him.

This is what I can think of...but I'm not turbo nor an expert. Others will jump in here too.

>1. What size piping should I use? What should it be made of?

I use some press bent 2.25" exaust piping on my car for the intercooler piping. It works great.

>2. Would a stock 2G SMIC be enough for this? Do I even need an
>intercooler for that little boost?

Dont use a 2g SMIC, as the inlet/outlet is at a funky angle. Use the 1g SMIC. Thats what i use, and has been plenty for 8-10 psi. The guy i got it from, ran 12's in the 1/4 mile with this intercooler, so you know it works...
>3. What should I use for boost control?

A nice manual boost controller will be fine.
>4. Would my injectors and fuel pump be enough (I have SAFC) to
>handle the boost I plan to run?

NO, you will need AT LEAST a inline fuel pump, and a boost pressure riseing rate fuel pressure regulator. The FPR will increase fuel pressure when yo go into boost, causing more fuel to be squirted out the injectors. The vortech SFMU is a damn nice FPR, and is very versatile. YOu can run larger injectors too using this FPR.
>5. Is a 2.5" exhaust good enough for this setup?

Yes.
>6. A 1G BOV should be more than enough, right?

Yes, but they like to leak above 10 psi or so.

You will need oil drain and feed lines, various tees and fittings for fuel and oil lines, and if you are a 97+, you will need to run a fuel return line under the car back to the gas tank. You should get at least a boost and EGT gauge, fuel pressure gauge, and a A/F gauge.

i agree ^^

Send me a mail, for these parts:
oil lines,
Fuel Lines,
Fuel Pressure Regulator(Vortech SFMU)
Boost, EGT, fuel pressure, and a/f guages,

and u will need a FCD(fuel cut defender) like the missing link...
i have these aswell

i also, have manifolds, electronic boost controllers, and many other parts for turbo kits..

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

So where can I get a downpipe? Can I get my normal downpipe cut to fit the turbo?

Whats the difference between getting a FPR or a better fuel pump? Do I NEED a FPR even if i get an upgrade pump such as the walbro?

I have a 97 eclipse, so I guess Ill need to run that back to the fuel tank. What kind of lines should I use? Where can I run them?

Im still a little bit shoddy on the boost control method. Where do all the vaccum lines go to? Anyone have a writeup on this?

If anyone has any writeups or can write up the procedure for the coolant, oil, and fuel return lines I would be very thankful. Everything else seems pretty self explanitory emoji Thanks guys, I really appreciate you guys helping me out.

a FPR is a Fuel Pressure Regulator , it sits right after the fuel rail and stops fuel going back to the tank till it reaches its set pressure of X this is so u can force enough pressure through those injectors to run properly ina turbo charged enviroment,

this is totaly diffferent thena a fuel pump, the fuel pump just flow a certain amount of fuel @ a certain amount of pressure...

the vacume lines are very cheap, just go to the auto parts store and get some silicone hose.. and plastic T's if u really want to..

the oil lines and fuel lines i have kits for, i can prvide u with instructions if u want..

the downpipe can be made at any local muffler shop, you will need a housing flange for them to weld to but other then that they can make u one pretty easy....

Oh man, you're going to have to do a bit more research about turbo fuel systems. A pump isn't the only thing you're gonna need. You also need a way to meter the fuel that your engine needs under boost. Most people on this board use a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, like the Vortech. It's not good enough to just get the regulator though, you have to calibrate it properly. For instance, depending on the injectors that you're going to use, you'll need to have it calibrated to rise 12:1, 8:1, 6:1, X:1 - where X is fuel pressure and 1 is boost. For every pound of boost, the fuel pressure will increase by X amount. Here's an example, for the HRC system with stock injectors you set your idle fuel pressure to 50, then when you hit 6 pounds of boost you'll want to see between 80 or 90. From 50 psi idle fuel pressure - a 5:1 rising rate will get to you 80 psi fuel pressure at 6 pounds of boost, where a 6.6:1 rising rate will get you to 90 psi fuel pressure at 6 pounds of boost.

I know im going to run the stock injectors. Im also going to use the Vortech SFMU, along with an upgraded fuel rail. Im setting my sights on 6psi boost, so what numbers do I set the FMU to?

Also, when anyone installed a turbo kit on thier 96+, you had to run a fuel return line right? Where did you attach it into the tank? Where did you run the line through? Thanks for your help guys.

Well, if you're only going to 6 pounds of boost - do it like I just said. Static pressure to 50, and end up somewhere around 80 or 90.
