oi! I still have my stock exaust on my 98 RS and its killing me. I have a muffler and am going to have someone bend me some pipes and install it. I went to a local performance shop to pickup a high flow cat for it. The guy is like dont put a cat on! Doesnt the engine need that compression in the high end? Here in michigan we dont have exaust test at all, unless you have a 85 or older i think. So i need some help from you guys! what should i do? I think i have asked this question before, but does anyone make a bolt on ex system for this setup i have now? i think the answer is no . and 1 more think, please dont flame me! What exactly is a cat-back? how does it differ from a standard exaust system? thanks!

from my limited experience, i've seen that the more flow on a turbo system the better, so you probably won't need that cat at all. you'd want to get 3 inch piping and a muffler with a 3 inch inlet so that the pipes don't change sizes dramatically or anything. with the 3" piping you should see noticeably less spool-up time on your turbo.

Yeah, thats what i figured. But this is my daily driver too, so I want to keep the low end tight too. example, I dont even let it boost on a regular drive. thanks for the advice! anyone else have any ideas? thanks.

A cat back exaust is basically the exaust system from the catalytic converter on back to the tailpipe. With a stage 2, at least get 2.5" cat back piping, and a high flow, straight through muffler. You can gut the cat out, which means you punch out all the catalyst inside the converter, and make it hollow. I did that and works great, while still maintaining the stock look. You can use the Pacesetter brand cat back system, which is around 160 bucks. You cant beat that price for true mandrel bent, 2.5" piping. The muffler it comes with isnt the greatest, so you can have your own welded on. I have 3" piping from the cat back, and it actually will improve your low end torque, because light boost will kick in a bit sooner, and your engine will breather better at lower rmps.

Yeah, you absouletly what to create as much flow as possible, that's why you need the bigger 3" exhuast. I'm guessing your mechanic probably didn't realize you had a turbo on the car and was thinking you would need the restriction of a smaller exhuast to create the torque that is need on a non-turbo car. Definately go with the bigger exhaust. I personally like the look of the Greddy Evo, but your going to pay for it.

:o you have a 3" dp? I'd like to see that, actually the whole set-up. Must be a nice increase fo shizzy. I'd like a 2.5 atleast. I still have the supplied HRC jr dp, STOCK cat and a 3" Thermal R&D catback. Works for me...

Jasvb TS2K2 - Hows the spool-up on that setup? Though I do not have my stage 2 on yet, when I do, I will have the HRC downpipe, stock cat, and stock cat-back with aerospeed muffler. I was considering getting a 3" cat-back sometime in the future, but is it really noticable/worth it? You like yours?

yeah man definitely have them take off that sorry ass cat, especially that you have no emissions testing, from my downpipe, they welded a 3" pipe to a 3" resonator, to a 3" magnaflow racing muffler. i think it's badass, and you'll notice a huge differnce from stock piping. it'll be a little louder but the gains are badss. i also noticed when after going 3", you'll spool your turbo a lot quicker, like i bet right now when you stomp on the gas it takes a while for it to finally kick in.
