I have a Hahn stage 1 with the vortech fpr and missing link and so far it's been going really well for me. I was just wondering if this summer I'll need an IC if I want to hit that whopping 5 psi or will I have to back off the throttle because my EGT's will get too high? Numerous times Hahn told me the IC will do little to nothing at 5psi so I'm guessing my EGT's won't be that much different than they are now. Can any of you stage 1 guys, or stage 2 guys that used to be stage 1, give me any info on the matter?

I went through ALL last summer w\o an IC, and yes I hit 4-5 psi. Having an IC is better than no IC regardless of what boost levels you're running, IMO!!!!

Sooooo what you're saying is 5 pounds is A OK? I'll most likley get an IC sooner or later but I just wanted to make sure my EGTs will stay in check when I hit the 5 psi.

But your EGT's stayed below 1600 at 5 lbs?

It's your IAT to worry about during weather changes causing detonation, not EGT's.

5PSI is doable, just make sure you have a properly mounted anf functional knock sensor and run good fuel.

What does IAT stand for? And what's an anf? I'm guessing my knock sensor is working correctly but I've never had knock...More info please.

Intake air temperature. Your knock sensor detects detonation.

It is my understanding that we do not have an IAT sensor...

And what is an ANF that needs to be properly mounted?

I'm not sure exactly how I can watch my IAT since I have no way of controlling the temperature of the air. Basically I want to know if at 5 psi will the temperature be too much for my engine to handle without detonation?

i boosted my car last august, stage 1. didn't have too many problems with high EGT's unless i was doing a long 4th gear pull at which i'd quickly hit 1600 degrees. one time i accidently got up to 1650 ish, really bad. i was quickly motovated to get a 1g SMIC and custom piping, which provided quite a nice horsepower gain along with the extra PSI that i was able to run. unforunately, i cracked piston ring landings the day after i got the intercooler in. really sucks.

Thanks ner947, you've thoroughly scared the shit out of me. Anybody else here ever run a stage 1 during summer time?

we do have an IAT sensor, however it won't tell you how hot the engine is running...that's what your egt is for. the intake air temp can obviously help promote detonation, but there's nothing that says you will detonate if the air temp goes over x amount. about the knock sensor...there really is no way as of yet, to monitor it and make changes based on its readings, so that really doesn't come into play as far as tuning to it is concerned. maybe your thinking of the 4g63.

as for the IC, how hot does it get where you live? i would at least get a side mount if it gets really hot. otherwise, just keep an eye on the egt's

It gets moderately hot. I'm in Illinois and we usually have 80 degree weather as an average I'd say. Not too bad. But from what I'm gathering, as long as I watch my EGT's then a stage 1 should be fine?

OK, to explain better....

As the temperature raises outside your Intake Air Temperature will increase. This will increase the chance of detonation, and Intercooler will keep the IAT down. You need to MONITOR your IAT to determine weather or not you need an intercooler. On my neon, my IAT dropped about 8 degrees on average with an intercooler which allowed me to run a tad more timing safely. A colder intake charge will almost always make more power and lean out your mixture. Keep those aspects of a turbo system in mind when intercooling.

As for the anf, it was a typo...I meant to type and

The knock sensor...and the reason i said to make sure it is functioning properly. The PCM automatically will retard the timing based on readings from the OEM knock sensor, that is why it is mandatory to run it on a stock PCM equipped vehicle.

There are plenty of tools out there to adjust your engine setting based upon knock, if you want to put down the coin.

So those with the HRC FMIC, what do you all run during the summer? I just got the profec b spec 2 bc and was wanting to put the boost right at 7 or 8psi. I am running 5psi on completely stock motor. You can find my performance list below my sig pic if you need to know any of those. So would I be ok running the 7 or 8psi during the summer? Here in Va Beach, VA it gets up to around the high 90's during the summer.

Thanks!

Good lord is this an old post. You'll be fine. I ran 7-8 psi here in Phx with 115+ all summer long.
