I'm definately going with a turbo setup this summer, most likely a Hahn Stage II. So I have a couple of questions ... I was looking at the JG forged pistons and the Crower rods that hahn sells and I'm wondering if it is worth having them put in now before i put the turbo on. The pistons run about $499 and the rods are $699 (i think). Are there other places to get these things, or other brands, are these decent prices? I have 37,000 miles on the engine, should I even bother? Do I need to buy the rings too? I'm not even sure what the *rings* so I could use an explanation on this. TIA

yes you need rings too. If you are going turbo, getting the pistons and rods now is the smartest thing to do. you will eventually need new pistons... not saying it's just a question of time... well, actually I am. just avoid broken ring landings and get the JE's or Wiescos first!

Erik - thanks for the info, I've research putting on a turbo for about 6 months now and I kinda got the impression that new pistons and rods were the way to go b/c they would eventually anyway. Educate me .... what are "broken ring landings"? That phrase is new to me. Thanks.

you know how there are three rings areas on the piston (2 for compression rings, and 1 for the oil ring), well the part of the piston between these ring recesses, where the rings sit, are called ring landings. they are also quite thin, so detonation can break them pretty easy

if your going to rebuild a engine might as well do it right the 1st time and only time i hope hehe.. you will want to change the bearings, oil pump, etc.. i would go with eagle rods if you plan to push around 400hp max. je pistons are great pistons. oh yah the eagle rods are cheaper then the crower so that might help also. i would except to spend around $1100-1600 about for your internals etc depending what you get. plus machine work and labor if your not going to pull the motor out. dang... my list can keep going but ill stop here.hehe

I heard the eagle rods where cheaper than the crower rods, but I have also heard mixed things about the eagle rods ... any input here would be appreciated. Where can you get Eagle rods? Howell ...ARD? I definately plan on going with the JE pistions and I figured at least 1100 on all this stuff - we'll see about labor, hoping I know a few guys :p My hope is to push right around 350. I know I could probably push for more, but I think I will be happy there.

PS - Anybody know why the last 3 lines of my sig are cut off - didn't use to be like that - are we limiting how many KB's we can have in there?

someone throw up some pics of siezed stock pistons and cracked ring landings, i know there are plenty floating around, hehe.... if anything will talk a person into beefing up internals, its some of those nasty pics i've seen here

alot of people have eagle rods. they are pretty good not better then crower but will do for 350hp if installed right. and yes, our sig are limited now..

eagle rods are good rods. My shop sells them all day for 315$ and i would not pay more than 550 for the je pistons. I wanted the crower rods bad and needed them within a week. I went to crower direct and was amazed at the size of the shop(super tiny) Well they told me that hahn buys rods a dozen sets, at a time this all equals to me paying 700$ to hahn for my rods. I sucks that i got taken but at the time i was super pressed for time.I would not worry about trying to get strenght for 400 plus hp. At that point you wont have a street car.

Yeah, I like it. If I remember right the Evo has an offset tip to help protect it from road damaged and yours is kinda centered. I was kinda thinking it wasn't the Evo, but it sure looks nice. Just tell the cops "What's an exhaust?"

well not to say thst ez is wrong but a 4 stroke gasoline engine ususally usses 3 rongs. also, forged are stronger then cast because they are made out of a block of steel and actually pounded into shape. Cast are used becuase its cheaper.

1) compression ring
2) scraper ring - scrapes the oil back dowm...if put it backwards your oil will get thrown up and your car will eat it up.
3) oil ring- as you can see from the previous pics it is designed to let oil flow through it and go all over the piston for lubrication. Usually it's a 3 part composite ring so when looked form the side it looks like

That's what I said (1oil+2compression=3). Except here in cali we call them "rings"

I just didn't mention the oil ring was a composite, for simplification

If your going to do all that for stage II , why hasnt anyone said anything about upgrading the gasket? Front mount intercooler? I hear the stock ones blow as well as the pistons once you start adding more hp. Wouldnt it be wise to get the clutchmasters stage IV kit as well? And how come HRC tells me to get the cometic gasket, which i they said costs like $60, over HKS which is like 200-300 something? also since i heard from many that hks is the top of the line, or am i just misinformed...

HRC:
Stage 1 - $2400 - 200hp

Stage II - $3500 (with fm intercooler, 16g turbo) 275hp

Stage III - $5500 (na) (need Stage IV clutch - 742) 350hp

Stage IV - $7500 - (with upgraded internals, 20g turbo) 475hp

Stage V - $8000 - (with upgraded internals, 25g turbo) 600hp

Both Stage IV & V need:

Cometic Gasket - (440) 354-0777 ($60?)

Bigger Axles - www.driveshaftshop.com ($??)

Quaif Differential - $1250 - www.Howellautomotive.com

clutchmasters Stage IV Clutch - $742

Also engine needs complete tune up as well as bored and stroked (ported as well?)
