We just got done installing a custom turbo kit on my friends' '91 toyota mr2 nonturbo and now when he gets into boost, white smoke pours out of his exhaust and from the engine area. He bought a used turbo. What could be causing this? It does smell like oil. Could the seals in the turbo be bad and that's why it's smoking? Any ideas of things to look for will be appreciated. TIA.

burning oil is a smell that is easily reconized..its nasty as hell haha.. It will be a bluish white color. Oil seals could def be it. You can find out by taking off the inlet pipe at the throttle body or wherever it is, then see if there is oil there, or oily film. If its smoking that bad, you should see it there in the piping.

It doesn't smell really. It's just tons of whiteish colored smoke. There is a bluish black tint to it. I'll tell him to take off the inlet pipe and see if there is an oily film or oil in there though. Thanks for the advice.

make sure he has a catch can and is not jsut dumpig the oil through the tube for pcv into the intake....

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.

Try holding a piece of white paper to the exhaust tips. See if anything spatters on, and if so, what it looks like. Something like water is normal. If it is green water, then there is coolant (probably a HG), and if it is black and oily, well, then it is oil. Oil could be turbo seals, a HG, or anthing similar.
