#37463, "Star cast exhaust manifold"

To make a long story short, a part of my star manifold broke off. The outer half of the full left lower mount. I have a bolt in there and it is secured by half of the mount. It does not leak, but I will have to get the piece welded back on(clean break and I have the piece). Basically I have a half circle cast piece that broke off.

Questions:

If I get the piece welded back on(cast welding), will it be strong enough to hold on or will it break more easily. I plan on using a large washer on the bolt to help with this.

If you guys suggest a new manifold, how much does a star manifold cost?

Does Wyatt still sell these? just curious

I went through Diamond Star Specialities and got my kit wholesale through the shop I used to work at. I can get it welded for probably $20, but wanted some of your inputs. Especially from someone who had to replace the manifold. If I do end up with a new one, I am going to tap/weld in a new egt bung and then have it Cryo Treated to keep this from happening again. I also had a crack in the top of the manifold about a year ago and had it welded. He also welded around the egt bung to prevent further cracking. No problems with it ever since till now.

Thanks guys!

Just try welding it... If it doesn't hold up... Darn you lost $20, and if it does, well that was a cheap fix.
I know that you can't just get a manifold from star without the purchase of the whole kit. However you can always just call Alain and have him make you one. Downside to that is, I am sure you will have to get a new downpipe made for you.

But if my memory serves me right, someone else broke the manifold, I think before the kit even got put on... So they were able to get a replacement, so I don't see a reason why you shouldn't be able to get one too...

Just a couple observations I am throwing out at you... Good luck.

Deano you could get the manifold welded back together welding cast iron is doable when it's a short weld
the welder need to heat the manifold glowing red with a torch seconds before welding it, and letting it cool down slowly

as for the EGT I strongly suggest that you ask the welder to weld a metal ring on the manifold, at least 1/3 inch thick, if you want to do a nice 1/8 NPT hole, because tapping into cast iron doesn't do nice threads

I've gotten about 4 different manifolds from Wyatt because my shitty manifold from star kept breaking.
