#36906, "Aftermath of my Rebuild (not so good)"

Well we finished today around 5 or so, total time in rebuild: probibly somehwere around 20 hours.
Problems: I think my exhaust cam gear is off by one tooth... It is idling really really rough.
There is some sort of a sliping sound when the engine is trying to turn over, I think that is because of the engine rebuild lube... But not sure.
Also there is a hellacious squeal comming from either the power steering pump, or the A/C. I think that it is comming from the PS pump, becuase the fluid is low... I hope.
I think one of the rocker arms was set up improperly, becuase I can hear a mad tick.
We decided to stop for the night, fearing that we are going to further hurt, than help the problem... I will let you know how things go after tomorrow.

Make sure the ticking sound isnt coming from toward the bottom of the block, an improperly installed rod bearing or tolerance problem with it could cause a tick too.

Sounds like you just need to do some belt adjusting, and fix the lifter- no big deal. Awesome that you got it done so fast! It took me um... 7 months emoji But mine's running now... if you need a hand or something let me know. I know you're in Redlands but I might be able to make it out one night. Congrats on getting it in!

Funny thing is, Ez was over on saturday, and he thought it was one tooth off, but we convinced him it wasn't... MY BAD.

Hey Dan, actually AAA towed my car to Diamond Bar last night, my cousin has a DUI and he can't drive out to Redlands this week, so we towed it to his house, to work on it durring the week emoji

Both of us are so tired though. We called AAA at 6pm last night, and a tow truck didn't even get to my house till after Midnight. It was a Joke, but we had been up for a little over 40 hours with a couple naps when we finally got to his house, so we are both dead tired...

Well last night, my cousin and I started working on my car around 5 or 5:30, by 10 we had the motor out, and we took a dinner break. By 12 we had the motor back in the car, and the motor mounts connected, the timing belt was back on... blah blah blah... All we have left is to hook the power steering pump back up, the intake to i/c pipes and the battery.

Problem solved: When you put tension back on the timing belt, some a couple of the gears pull one way or the other.. We had to take the belt off a couple times and set it back a little (think it took 4 or 5 times to get it perfect), however, now when the belt is on and the tension is on the belt, the cam gears line up, and the crankshaft gear arrow is lined up with the one on the block.
I sure hope this is right this time!

So... I hope that the piston didn't hit the valve! I poped the valve cover, and I saw a rocker that "Could" have been the culprit, but i am not sure... Well I will start her up tonite and keep all posted.

I've been told that the Howell/JE 8.x pistons are non-interference.

I know for sure that it will run without tapping if you're only one tooth off. Ask kaiser emoji

Dan, I am using stock pistons, my ol'lady didn't let me spend much on this rebuild. She is letting me keep the car though hehe.. I told you I wear the pants in my house...
I would like to buy that short block from you and start peicing together a real motor to run in this car.
I'll try and get in touch with you the next couple of weeks to work something out! emoji

one tooth off will not make your valve hit, unless timing is way off.

My symptom was just low vaccum and shitty idle.

Howell 8.6/JE 8.8 are the same pistons. I reference check the rings, bore, and dish design and they are the same. Not sure why both companies advertise differently.

Dan, how is your car running on them 441cc injectors? let me know. Drop me an email. You Peperdine account is acting up.
