#36895, "Compression Tests Results after 1,000 of Stage II Turbo"

1996 Eclipse GS
Original Motor (Not built...yet) with 50,000 miles
Turbo HRC Stage II for approximately 1,000 miles

This weekend I picked up a compression gauge and decided to see how my motor was holding up to the recently installed turbo. All the guages have been reading perfect - EGT temps are good and A/F ratio is right in the middle of rich. I ran the motor for about 10 minutes to let the temperatures come up to normal operating temperatures and then performed the test. I did the test twice to double check the numbers. Here are the results:

1st Test:

Cylinder #1 #2 #3 #4
210 203 210 210

2nd Test:

Cylinder #1 #2 #3 #4
210 215 210 210

It seems as all the research (hours spent reading on this board) and the posters at 2gnt have really helped make the turbo install go smoothly with no problems.

Thanks guys,
Kurt

hey congrats. who did you install btw, and how much did the testing supplies cost?

it would be interesting to check you compression every oil change to see what is the average decline in compression rate.

I have done all the work on my car including the turbo kit so far except for the head gasket repair about a year ago - that was performed by an excellent shop here in North Brunswick, NJ.

Jsupetran, that is exactly why I did the compression test. I want to see how compression will change every 3,000 miles.

The compression gauge cost $25.00 at Sears and is really easy to do. First warm the car to normal operating temperature. Then, disconnect all plug wires, remove all plugs, disconnect MFI relay (so no fuel will be delivered), hook up the compression gauge, and then start the car with the gas pedal to the floor - keep turning the motor over until the needle on the gauge stops bouncing. Take the reading and repeat for each cylinder. Once finished, disconnect the negative to your battery to reset the ECU so that the Check Engine light for MFI relay disconnect will disappear.

Should only take you about 30 minutes.

What shop did you get your headgasket done at? Im over in Rockland County, NY and all the shops around here charge an arm and a leg for the job.

The shop is called Raineys in North Brunswick, NJ. They were not cheap but did an excellent job. I paid $700 but this included all parts and I also had all the belts changed (p/s, accessory, and timing belt) at the same time.

I don't usually like to take my car to a mechanic since my car is modified but this shop I trust 100%. I am always worried that the mechanic would see it is a modified car and go take it for a test drive (beat the shit out of it). I had to leave the car for a couple of days but they always keep it inside and when it was finished parked it where no one could dent my doors.

They also have new equipment lifts - the type where the arms swing out, you pull the car in, and then swing the lift arms under - which make it perfect for working on a lowered car. Not all shops have these.

Hope this helps,
Kurt
