#36086, "White Smoke under the littlest throttle"

Well, I knew the time was coming, just didn't want it to happen so close to the holidays.
I get white smoke, doesn't seem to be much of a tint to it if there is any coloring.
I havn't had the chance to do a compression check or anything, but i am thinking it isn't going to be pretty.

Anyone know any thing that could cause white smoke? I have already ruled out cold weather, i drive 60 miles to work, and it was doing it all the way till i got here.

Kaiser if you read this, you may have a visitor tomorrow nite sometime, for some Data Logging action!

Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Thanks,

-Danny

Check your coolant and see if your oil is milky. Might just be a headgasket leak.

Might even consider changing your oil just to get a good lood at its color.

How do your water temps look.....in the normal range? Could datalog and read the exact temp on the coolant. Mine reads 205 exactly under hard boost and everything warm.

If you let a headgasket go too long it will cost you your bottom end. You will also get a good look at your pistons this way.

Keep us updated.

I hope I can just change my HG this week while I am off of work, that would be nice.
My Water temp stays in the normal operating temperature, no color seems to accompany the smoke I am getting.
If I can get ahold of Keiser, and he can Data Log this thing for me that would be great, takes a whole lot of guess work out of things.

I'll keep everyone posted, and take pictures along the way!

Little more info: Well I was dumb and drove my car home from work yesturday. When I left work there was plenty of oil. Got home, NO oil. Let her cool down a bit did a compression test:
192
58
194
56
Got my stuff to rebuild my top end, and for the love of God, I hope the bottom end can hold out till I get the money to rebuild it emoji

These things seem to hit at the most in-opertune of times!! With Christmas, us buying a new house... Blah... One good thing! I get to spend money on my car, and valuable time, and not get the cold sholder from my ol'lady!!!

Well guess that the Camaro SS is getting some freeway time this week emoji

Question: If anti-freeze got into my cylinders, does this ruin berrings instantly? Or would it be safe if it only had limited exposure?

Thanks guys. I'll keep you updated on the rebuild.

-Danny

Sorry Danny I responded soo late. haven't been checking the board in a while. Been busy trying to sort out my shit.

More than welcome to use my daalogger anytime. but seems like you are due for a rebuild. If you are overboring it...then by al lmeans drive it. If not then rebuild it before further dmamging your walls.

I wouldnt be so quick to call a headgasket problem...you could have very well cracked the piston ring landings of your two pistons..try the oil test when you do the comp test, see if comp goes up a little bit..that will tell you its the ring lands.. but its really got to be either or...you cant really tell if the ring lands are cracked unless you pull the pistons out too and look at them..

Yea man Those #'s seem way too low to be just a head gasket. Anyway if your doing the head gasket you might as well reubild. Shit you got everything off anyway. I am sure if you wanted to you could find someone on the board with some pistons and just do a re-ring kit and swap out all of you old berings with new. That is IF your cylinder walls are within spec. If not plan on spending about a grand on parts emoji Figure you can do the work your self you could get away with a full rebuild for about 1500. That would of course be with forged internals.

Pulling the head tonite when i get out of work. My cousin is coming over to give a little support.
I hope this is just a head gasket. I bought all the stuff i need to rebuild the top end.. including some new valve springs. I found a guy in San Bernardino who is going to mill my head on sunday...
I'll take some pictures of my piston tops when i get the head off.

Anyone know about the anti freeze in the oil? How long do you suppose that Anti-freeze would have to be in the case in order to damage the main berrings? I really don't want to have to do a bottom end job till the early summer. emoji

Thanks guys you have all been great this past year emoji

I really hate to say it, but i would put a lot of money on broken piston ring lands. You really need to pull out all of the pistons and inspect them for damage. Once you have the head off, it really only takes an extra 15 min to pull the pistons out (if that). If I were you, I'd be looking for a few spare stock pistons though. When I rebuilt mine, I had 1 busted ring land and 2 cracked lands. It left me with one good piston that XtremeRS and I put in his car after he busted a ring land. Good luck with it :/

Well i am just procrastinating getting started today, cause it is raining out, and doesn't feel that great.
I am gonna pull the pistons out since everything is already out any way.

Just in case: Keiser, James, Dan, anyone have any extra stock pistons in good shape? Just thinking ahead, I'll know in a couple of hours for sure..

be sure to look at the piston carefully along the piston ring groves, or ring "lands". This is what my piston looked like when i took it out. Notice the sharp edge where it looks black then the piston looks clean? Right between the piston rings? Thats the crack. I happened to break the first two ring lands on mine...the pieces fell out when i poked at em a bit...

what it looked like when the pieces fell out.....

Good Lord, now you are just scaring me!!!
I really didn't want to take the motor out this weekend! But shoot, I may as well just go on thru with the rebuild!

Question (i asked on the engine section as well) What is the easiest way to get the head out of the engine bay? Should i leave the intake manifold attached to it till i get it out of the car? Any help will be appreciated.. Pictures are good too.
Thanks,

-Danny
