#35970, "30LB injectors and datalog results"

I got my OBD-2 software the other day and finally had time to check out the car. I did not check it out till it was already warmed up.

Idle:
RPM 846 from the datalogger itself
STFT -19%
LTFT -25%
IAT 80 degrees F(car idled 30 minutes with outside temp 40F)

Kept RPM at 1000 for a few seconds and these changes noted.

STFT -10%
LTFT -25%

1500 RPM with these results

STFT -3%
LTFT -25%

I did not do any pulls and check spark advance. I will check that later. I did clear all my rich codes(testpipe)and all was fine for another 30minuts idle time. It will probably throw a check engine when I first start it cold again.....happened before with another friends datalogger when I first installed my turbo kit(year ago).

I will install 335cc injectors and suspect that they will come close to maxing out STFT. These should be the largest injectors that the car will be able to idle normally without being rich when idling a warm car. I am also at stock idle pressure.

I think you could idle 36LB injectors if you set your idle at 1000 rpm. This would cause the need for more fuel which would allow your car to run normally without being too rich.

This was just one time on the datalogger and the results could vary between tests. In the summer when the car is warm(even after sitting all night in the hot south summer) it starts easily every time and does not need to have the ignition cycled to get it to pull fuel(stft/ltft). Winter is a bit more tempermental, but has its good points.....more power.

not bad 30# and no afc datalogged sweet dude

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.

all you have to do is lower your fuel pressure at idle, to make your fuel trim percentages come down a bit. With my 315's, i idle around 25 psi of fuel pressure. That gives me pretty good fuel trim #'s. No rich or lean cel's either.. I never stay close to -25% fuel trims..

This was not my point in posting. It is to let the other star turbo kit guys know what the fuel trims are when using the Vortech fmu that comes with the kit, walbro 255 high flow pump and 30LB injectors. I also have the fuel pump rewire done.

Even though I have a CEL, my car runs normally under vacuum and idle.

Right, i get that, but your fuel trims are almost maxed out. You are way to rich. Thats why you get the cel. You need to lower your fuel pressure a bit. Just giving insight to your datalog results..

I know it throws a couple codes. Besides living with the light, that is the only downside. When the ecu pulls fuel and it does not max out the percentages, the car runs just like it does with stock injectors. My gas mileage and driveability is not compromised.

If I had a Super FMU, I would do what you suggest. When dropping fuel pressure it can change the spray pattern almost to where it just runs out of the injector. This is not good IMHO. I have a friend who is the head tuner at hypertech and has installed engine management systems on a couple race cars(mostly electromotive) and he does not like lowering idle pressure below 25psi. I do understand this is where yours is and it should work well.

You are debating a point that was not intended for this post. My intent was for those that have this setup to read it and understand what trims they are most likely getting. I was one of the first few people to do this and since then nobody has datalogged it and then posted the results. Some people have reported that their car would not run or would not pull enough fuel to idle properly. 1997 cars should have no problem. Maybe earlier or later models were slightly different. Hell, I can do the key dance and other models cannot. Maybe the ecu is slightly different(ecu is not swappable and we know that)and cannot pull as much fuel as a 1997 model 420A.

Food for thought only.

If you do a search there were datalogs from my car running 525's with stock fuel pressure and idling perfectly months ago. Results vary from car to car.

I remember those. Both trims were at -25% and idled great. It just hesitated slightly around the onset of boost or at low psi if I remember correctly.

thanks for the reminder

Did some pulls today at 10psi on 93pump gas. Outside air temp 60F, sea level elevation.

Near 10 Vacuum, short term fuel trim went to Zero. Long term fuel trim went to zero around 0-1psi boost.

Air intake temp dropped to mid 70's when above 70mph. I will get better results on AIT later on.

Spark advance was near 30degrees advance just before entering boost. On a hard 3rd gear pull to 7000rpm spark advance dropped to 16.9-17.5 degrees advance(2 separate pulls). When I shifted into forth it was at 19 degrees advance at 6000rpm. I could not do a 7000rpm pull in 4th due to road curves.

My egt stayed at 1580-1600 during these hard pulls.

I had a friend datalog the runs and we graphed the results. I am still trying to figue out how to up the frames per second. I can only get it to show a frame every 2 seconds. I can slow the playback down, but you can see the rpm jump and not smooth like it is actually running. Any help would be appreciated.

I plan on datalogging with some race gas in the near future. It will probably net an octane around 100(C16/93pump) and I will post the results.

For now I can see the car is running fairly safe on timing. My starion front mount works damn well also keeping AIT down. When my car was at idle or just moving around(backing etc.) the intake temps were 102F after hard pulls down the highway. At 40mph, they dropped to 90 and then at 70mph, they dropped to the seventies.

Now how about that OBD-2 datalogging sampling rate help emoji
