#33997, "Intercoolers w/ Hahn kit"

Hey guys,

I recently got a stage one Hahn kit. Didn't get the stage 2 kit and I want to start the process of getting to stage 2. Now I hear about people not buying the SMIC or FMIC upgrade from Hahn. Some are going with a 1g SMIC or soem other ones called Starion or something. And I believe there is another brand. I've heard of three intercoolers.

I am assuming this is like a "custom" stage 2 upgrade? If so I would only need a shop to do the piping right?

I know Hahn kits need a new wastegate regulator (or something like that, I forgot) that limits the boost to 5 PSI (or around there) for a stage 1 until you upgrade to stage 2.

I guess I will need the IC, the piping, and the new wastegate part from Hahn. Anything else? Which IC is the best, the 1g or one of the other two? What kind of shop will make me the piping? Will I need to buy the mandrel bends for them to make it? If so where?

Also, can I have pictures of each IC? I believe the 1g is a SMIC and the starion comes in an SMIC AND FMIC. And I don't know about any other brands. Sorry for the long post emoji .

Not really. You can buy prebent mandrell bends online and stuff, then piece to gether. I got mine done at a local muffler shop.

No, no need to get another actuator. Just get a boost controller to up your boost from 5 psi. The boost controller just limits the boost pressure the wastgate sees, so it lets you run more boost before the wastegate opens.

I had a post a while back with all my pics of my setup. If you try and look a bit, i'm sure you will find it. Sorry i dont have the link right now...The 1G smic is a damn good IC. It flows plenty. The one i got, the guy was running mid 12's with it. So you know it can flow some good air. As with any IC, be sure it gets really good airflow over it.

Cool, if I decide to buy the piping pieces and assemble the IC piping myself, will they need to be welded? If so I just may get a shop do the job.

Will a shop just weld it together for me? Or will I have to have them fabricate everything? If they need to fabricate it all, can I just buy them the mandrel bend for them to use since I heard for exhausts most customs shops will make you a pressbent.

I already have a joe p. Boost controller. To boost at about 8-10 PSI all I need then is a boost controller and the intercooler? Thanks.

NOW U TELL ME- GEEEEEZ I didnt know that the 1g intercooler was better, I just bought a HRC intercooler when I saw a 1g for like fitty bucks I could have gotten. DSMeclipseGS im doing the same I couldnt see spending all that extra cheese for 2 when I can start at one and pick up parts here and there to complete it. Yes what u were talking about was a wastegate actuator set to run up to 10psi of boost, thats about it as far as the difference between the 2,the boost controller would be a good alternative. It's like an 1100 difference so use it to buy all that stablizing shit. Peace

Oh ok.... I get it, so the kit comes with a cheap wategate actuator that acts like a "Ghetto" MBC?? So I if get a MBC it will replace that and therefore let set the boost level? I understand now.

And any help on the questions on the piping in my previous post?

And what's the starion and other IC out there. I think the Starion is a FMIC, right? And there are a few others. Are they any better than the 1g? How do they compare?

Okay, I feel a little clarification is necessary here. First, the 1g sidemount intercooler is NOT better than the HRC sidemount. It is cheaper however. The HRC sidemount is bigger than the stock 1g sidemount which is why HRC sells a sidemount as an upgrade for the factory turbo cars.

Second, the wastegate that comes with the Super16g is NOT a "ghetto MBC." It is the turbo's wastegate that regulates pressure. It is preset. The purpose of an MBC is to bleed off some of the pressure before it gets to the wastegate so the turbo is pushing a higher PSI than the wastegate is seeing.

Example: The wastegate it preset for 5psi. If you set the boost controller to bleed off 5psi, you will essentially be "setting your boost to 5psi" because the turbo will be pushing 10psi of boost to the engine before the wastegate sees 5psi and starts to release excess pressure. Make sense?

A Starion is an older turbocharged Mitsubishi car made in the 80's. They came stock with frontmount intercoolers. Many people have chosen to modify the endtanks and use them on their Eclipses/Talons. I believe they have a little bit better airflow than a sidemount, and they definitely cool the charge more because they are mounted up front. emoji

Yeah, i didnt mean that the 1G SMIC was better than Hahn's, but i would really like to see a flow/cooling comparison done on them to see exactly whats up. They are both very efficient, and flow extremely well. Like i said before, the guy i got my IC from has and AWD 1st gen talon that did mid 12's on it. Thats at least 350 hp there. At that point, you would prob want to get a FMIC no matter which sidemount IC you have...The 1G SMIC also likes to have plenty of airflow over it to cool properly. The Hahn kit SMIC may not need quite as much air to cool the same, but with my IC, even when it was really hot out, the outlet of the IC was always cooler than the inlet. I have tons of airflow over my IC. It works great, and I plan on running 15 psi on it for now. It should do just fine for the time being.

i have the hrc smic piping and a 1g smic. wouldn't this piping be to big for the 1g.(flow wise) and would a supra smic be better for this piping because its bigger and has bigger inlets and outlets? i can't find a hrc smic anywhere and don't want to pay the 500 or 600 to hahn's.

I've been thinking the same thing, a few people this weekend are trying to convince me to upgrade my I/C to a front mount, as they say i'll definitely thank them later. I don't want to pay 1200+ err whatever for Hahn's IC and piping!!!!!
