#33957, "POSSIBLE BREAKTHROUGH for all of you turbo guys CRYOGENICS"

its called cryogenics what they do is slowly freeza a part at a temp of -300 degrees for 36 hours and then brought back slowly for 12 hours, what this does is make it VERY strong and its alot cheaper than buying forged materials. what i am thinking is that you could take for example regular rods and pistons and get them cryogenically frozed to strengthen them at a lot cheaper price than buying forged pistons and rods. if this really works then it can be used for a multitude of things.

here is the process

and here is the prices

hmmmmmm... id like to know the physics behind the process. i cant see how freezing them would do anything for strength. am i wrong? (probably, LO emoji )

:shhh: i do cocaine :/shhh:

I don't know much about cryogenics either, but I would bet it makes the material more brittle since it makes it much harder. Brittleness would be bad for internals which go through a lot of shock.

I could be wrong though, b/c like I said, I don't know much about cryogenics.

This has been around waaaaayyy before I was alive. Nothing new. It's not common b/c it's not very proven. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Most popular route for racers is to buy forged stuff, b/c it works and has been proven.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

Cryogenics is an excellent way to strengthen parts, but it won't replace forged pistons and rods. It would be a good idea to further strenthen rods, the engine block, studs, valves, etc.

We now have a local cryogenics business that does all our race parts in town. I just had a set of new brembo rotors cryo treated. The process that they use takes 70 hours total.

It will strengthen steel to 270% of its original strenth. It actually changes the structure and relieves all stress cracks that were formed in the forging process. My rotors are guaranteed to get at least 150% more wear before warping or cracking. I get roughly 10K miles on rotors as it is right now with my current pads/fluid/lines due to lots of racing.....and not just autocross.

My spare motor will also be cryo treated(forged pistons/rings/rods/bearings/block/crank/head/valves/springs/rockers/etc. etc. etc.) to make everything much stronger. The big problem is if you have to ship items out of town.....this can add big expense to an already expensive project.

It will never take the place of forged internals. I even plan on cryo treating my axles. These will never be as strong as stage 3 axles, but it is a much less expensive alternative.

Stand by for Polk Performance Crossdrilled and Cryo treated front brake rotors for the 2gnt.

If you guys have any questions or want a good price on doing stuff. I currently pay Jobber for all items cryo treated here. I will get you a price for the treatment and shipping back to you. Carbotech gets $80 per set of brake rotors just for cryo treatment. This does not include return shipment. That would be near $100 total. This is too damn high.

So the cryo treatment will futher strengthen forged rods and pistons as well?

does it make them brittle like the one guy was saying? I don't think I'll need to do this for my hp goals but I'm just curious?
